Paul Stanley in Guitar Afficionado

I picked up the latest issue and was surprised to see an article on Paul Stanley in his home in beverley Hills with his Gibson Les Paul Historic reissue and a fleet of Ibanez Icemen - you rarely see Kiss members doing this sort of stuff.

Paul has cropped his hair - so the guys must be on a touring break

It is a nice article and worth a look if you are curious about Paul Stanley.

You can get a feel for it by going to:

He had a heart attack a few months ago and wasn't touring with KISS when it happened; I believe he was down under doing his solo thing. I have NEVER seen him with any gibson products except for a firebird. Never a LP' date=' and its funny his Silvertones are not in that picture........... Those went over like a lets say a Lead Balloon......... lol[/quote']

He was here, but still had the long hair then. I think KISS have actually performed together after the heart scare aswell.

Paul regularly played an Explorer aswell as the Firebird. He had a natural and a white one.

I think Paul has always separated 'stage' guitar from what he might like to own and play privately.

In short, the Les Paul did not fit his image as the Star Man - glam and outrageous. (Although Ace made the Lester his own). But the Explorer fitted the image, until he did the deal with Ibanez.

I think there is a silvertone elsewhere in the article. Not my favourite, but I do have a soft spot for the IceMan, not that I would ever try and play something that big. He gets away with it 'cos he is so tall.

He is tall. I saw him in Lahaina, Hawaii. Turns out he has a little art gallery there. That's a flattering picture of the old boy, he looked more like a scary drag queen when I saw him without the soft lighting and photoshoot makeover. I'll have to pick up a copy, I'd like to check it out. Thanx Mr. Robot.

Like Gene, Paul now wears a wig when in Kiss makeup and on stage.

On the subject of Guitar Aficionado; If you haven't checked it out yet I recommend it highly. Great guitar porn and they often take a different slant on things. Usually showing the guitar collections of people not in the music business.

As for the musicians, they will show some of their axes but will focus more on another element such as their cars or homes.

I enjoy it.

I agree. It can be a bit pretentious, but I have every issue so far. A nice change from some of the banal and repetetive junk in most guitar magazines.

If I read one more article asking some 20 year old pimply faced kid what inspired him or her to pick up the guitar - and how does he get that amazing tone - I swear I will vomit.

I know - I am sounding old. But I reckon I could save a few hundred bucks a year, by just reading the back issues from 2000 or 1990 - and I would get most of the info that I need.

String and tune Guitar - Plug into Amplifier - Plug Amplifier into wall socket. If you buy crap - it will probably sound crap. Game Over.

PS didn't know about the wig Must be stuck on with super glue

He played Firebirds and Marauders. I think the early Kiss albums had a note saying Kiss plays Gibson guitars and Pearl drums because they want the best.

Lets not forget the counterfeit Ace and Peter

My brother who is the biggest Kiss fan ever refuses to go see them again as long as the fakes are in the band. He has seen them every time they've rolled through the Burgh since I took him to his first Kiss show in 79. They are playing here tonight and I don't think he's going.

I found it hard to watch the replacements I have to admit. Not their fault though and Tommy is a good musician.

I did spit the dummy when they hid the fact that Ace was not coming out here for the gig with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra until after the tickets had been sold.

I wrote a letter to the newspaper which started a sh!t fight and the boys ended up fielding questions about it when they arrived. One point to me. Tee Hee

I actually picked up this very same issue when I was in Hawaii this summer. The magazine itself was pretty good, atleast the part concerning music (and I found the Lenny Kravitz-interview to be a nice read), but it was a bit too pretentious for my taste at some points. Still, quite a good read and it was certainly well-written.

Also, are you sure Gene wears a wig nowadays? I still think it might be his own hair, the other night when I saw an episode of his show, it was at least down to his chin.

Actually the guitar that Paul played that looked similar to a Marauder was the Gibson L6 S, and it was nicknamed the "Midnight Special". The Marauder had the Flying V style headstock and the L6 S was closer to a Les Paul.

Paul did play Les Pauls on the Hot In The Shade tour.
