daveinspain Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 While looking at Marble_Delux's thread and the picks of his 73 it got me wondering about mini humbuckers... What do they sound like? Are they like a P90s? Are they something that just didn't catch on? Advantages, disadvantages??? Can one of you Gurus please comment...
NeoConMan Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Jeez, how do you explain a sound? I dunno. They sound thin for a humbucker, output is a little less. Not focused and clear as a P-90 because you still have two coils blending two signals. When I first played them, it kinda clicked and I thought "okay, I get it." I like different pickups, love P-90's, so I wanted mini HB's for years. Simply a little different. The Firebird with 'em is different sounding than my Deluxe, so there's another variable...
ksdaddy Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I didn't like the ones in my '71 Deluxe but that was just my opinion. When I pick up an LP I want it to be over the top. I yanked them and put in Dimarzio DLX and I love them. They were a direct replacement but with about twice the nuts of the stock ones.
Thundergod Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I tried them once on a firebird that I stupidly didnt buy (it was a bargain as the guy "really needed the money" to fuel his GAS needs)... They sounded ok, but I couldnt compare them with anything else at the time, so I guess Neo's and ksdaddy's comments are more useful here...
Les Paul Fanatic Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Mini hums are a cross between single coils and humbuckers, You don't get the choked sound like a singlecoil but at the same time you don't get the balls to the wall sound like you do with humbuckers. Well actives anyways, passives are a different story.
