musicmaker99
Since playing my first ever Genesis this past weekend (a "standard" offerred on CL for $300) I knew I wanted one....in sunburst. The one I played was wine red, kinda beat up and the toggle switch only worked in the middle position but that neck...oh, THAT NECK!!! It fit my hand like a glove; the 50's style width was puur...fect, add to that the tone (albeit both buckers only on this model) and I had a GAS ATTACK almost instantly! At any rate, I scored a Genesis Custom online at GC/California. I know I paid a premium for it ($399) but it's in good condition, is the sunburst that I wanted and I'll have the GC 30 day return policy to fall back on. Shipping to Minnesota was only $18. The deal almost fell through when I was informed I would have to buy a case to ship it in (another $79). However, both the California GC as well as the one I frequent here in Minneapolis said to just return the case for a refund after taking receipt of the guitar. So, thanks to this forum for turning me onto the Genesis. How anyone could perceive these beauties as ugly is beyond me :) I think they're the ultimate 60's--70's retro machine. RaSTuS
Congrats on the purchase, the waiting is the hardest part (mmm, sounds familiar), be very interested in your appraisal once it arrives, and pics of course. There's instructions on how to post pics in the DO-IT-YOURSELF thread pinned to the top of the Epi Lounge, thanks to animalfarm who compiled and maintains it. EDIT: there's a Genesis expert in residence here, I'm sure he'll be very interested also.

musicmaker99
Thanks everyone. With a little luck it should arrive by weeks end and I will surely post some pics. Are the shipping costs to OZ prohibitive?
RaSTuS
Are the shipping costs to OZ prohibitive? For guitars, between $80 and $200 depending on the seller, if a guitar + shipping + insurance costs more than $1,000, then %10 tax and %3 duty applies, unless it's US made from US parts, then you get an exemption because of the Free Trade Agreement we have with the US. musicmaker99
Thanks everybody. I'm really looking foreward to receving the Genesis it's just too bad GC won't give me a tracking #(...SAY WHAT?!!!). The Wine Red Genesis is still for sale and I'm tempted to make an offer. Brianh, what do you think would be a reasonable offer on a Genesis in fair cosmetic condition and with questionable electronics (but more than likely an easy fix)? It's a great player and the tuners were replaced with very nice Grovers but he'll include the original Gotohs. He wants $300 but will take $285. A pic, such as it is, of the Geni in question is attached. Cheers everybody
brianh
99, it's hard to say from that pic. I'd need to see the control cavity up close and the pickups. If the PUPs are original and in good shape, and no neck or control cavity cracks, frets in good shape and neck straight, then $285 is a fair price. I paid $300 for my wine red Geni, but it is 100% original, and came with a case. I get annoyed when folks change out the tuners on Genis, there's nothing wrong with the originals, at least that a little lube job can't fix. But that's just the purist in me, Grovers are decent tuners. I bought that one to have around as the daily twanger so I could keep my case queens in collectable condition. You may find yourself in the same position. Here are some close-ups for reference:
brianh
PS, here's a Deluxe for sale on eBay in near-mint condition: http://cgi.ebay.com/...ME:B:SS:US:1123 $595 + shipping is too much for this model, but that particular guitar is one of, if not the cleanest example of a Deluxe as I've seen. The case looks to be in great shape too, and it's a real one.
RaSTuS
Is that a scratch in the bottom left hand quadrant of that last pic, or is it some kind of reflection/aberration Brian ?
brianh
Is that a scratch in the bottom left hand quadrant of that last pic, or is it some kind of reflection/aberration Brian ? Looks like a gouge, and there's some binding separation in the cutaway. Still, it's a damn clean example. That gouge could be fixed with Stew-Mac touch-up pens and some CA glue. Nevermind, I thought you meant the one on eBay. My WR Geni has two or three finish scratches, just never got around to fixing them. Didn't really see the point anyway, since I bought it as a stunt double.

RaSTuS
reissue in the near future?? Something that looks similar and has the same name, yes, RI no. It doesn't have the same specs and layout as the original, Brian bought the differenced up in a recent thread on them and he's the resident Genesis expert, he mentioned he wouldn't have one because they weren't true to the original. What I found was a thread based on some mock-ups on Epi's FB page, I'm not sure if this is the thread I was thinking of, I think it is. http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/60835-epiphone-genesis-reissue/page__view__findpost__p__823700__hl__genesis__fromsearch__1 And, yeah, modding is my middle name so I understand the need (and fun) to tailor a guitar to suit your own personal preferences. musicmaker99
Brian, that's a beauty, as all your Genis appear to be. Since I have the GC return policy backing my purchase up I didn't request any additional pics. So, this is a bit of a mystery guitar as far as overall condition is concerned. I think I'll give the seller a call and ask about a tracking #. It could conceivably be here as early as tomorrow. Thanks for the pics and advice Re: Wine/Red Genesis. brianh
There is a reissue in the works, perhaps available sometime later this year. Jim R. PM'd me for some comments which I gave him. I understand it will be based on the Deluxe model. Other changes are possible, but same body shape, neck, headstock, and dual humbuckers of some sort from what he said. The pics in the other thread are preliminary, but the inlays seem to be taken from the Custom model. Could be a fun alternative to the same 'ol Lep Saul signature / reissue / limited edition / anniversary variations....
BryanFoFyan
i will be on the look out for those although someone mentioned if it had p-90s it would be better and i think i agree with that comment only thing im missing is a guit with p90s

BryanFoFyan
yeah i know but for a p90 guitar id rather have like soapbar design those look too much like humbuckers
brianh
Well if it's a hit they'll probably make a million variations. Personally, I'd like to see a goldtop.
