BigKahune
. From the Gibson website - "Gibson put the first crown peghead logo on an ES-300 back in 1940, and it has graced the headstocks of many legendary Gibson guitars ever since..." Some have called it a "thistle" or "wheat". Also some mistakenly call it a "holly", but that is a misnomer coming from that the fact that originally the wood of the holly was used as an overlay on the headstock to create a black background for the inlays. On the specs of guitars that still use the holly wood overlay, Gibson sometimes refers to the headstock as having the Gibson logo and holly (meaning the holly overlay, not the crown logo). It's one of many inlays that Gibson uses on its headstocks - flowerpot, split diamond, etc.
