Les Paul Studio 50's humbucker owners?? Please chime in!

I have a honeyburst model on the way. I took the plunge, without trying one, & got a pretty sick deal on it.

When I saw the P-90 models released, I thought, MAN, one with humbuckers would be nice.. Well, didn't realize they finally did it, and grabbed one!

 

I've read review, after review, after review, of happy owners. I really haven't heard a bad thing about them..

So, I'm interested in what people here have to say.

 

And, what's good for the fretboard, since it's actually "maple"? My typical rosewood/ebony conditioners aren't recommended for maple.. Is it safe to use on "baked" maple?

I have a '50s Tribute Humbucker model from the first batch which has a rosewood board and a light back. This is one of the best value 'pro quality' guitars out there, IMO.

 

Great sound and feel and, with the faded finish, you really get to appreciate the craftsmanship and quality of the woods- See for yourself below. You'll love that honeyburst. Oh, and by all accounts, people who have bought one of the recently made Gibson models with baked maple boards think they're great.

I'm also planning on buying one of these in the not-so-distant future :D but was wondering about the neck size.

 

I'm currently playing an Epiphone G400 which has a neck that is perfectly sized for my hands (which are quite small). I've heard that the 50s tribute has a very large/wide neck - does anyone know how it compares to the epiphone for example? Ideally I would like to try the LP before ordering but no stores around here stock it.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Width is not normally different, rather the thickness/roundness of the rear profile that you have in your palm. Generally '50s necks have a fuller, rounder profile than '60s necks but there is said to be variability (according to the Gibson site) because they are hand finished.

 

 

A couple of things to consider:

-Many people say that an Epiphone neck has a rear profile somewhere between that of a Gibson '50s and Gibson '60s neck

-An SG seemingly has a longer neck than a Les Paul because of where it is joined to the body. Whether that results in an SG neck feeling thinner than a Les Paul neck I'm not sure but all I can say is that the neck on my '50s Tribute Les Paul Studio has more of a baseball bat feel than the '50s neck of my SG Special Faded. I suspect not and that it's down to the individual variability.

 

BTW, I also have small hands but I have no trouble with the very chunky rear profile of my LP Tribute. You might not have the tribute model available locally (being a Thomann exclusive) but there should hopefully be a Gibson dealer near to you where you could at least try other '50s neck equipped Les Pauls such as the regular LP studio. Just look at the specs on the Gibson site to find out which other LP models have '50s necks.

Edit: PS. Thomann have a 30-day no quibble return policy. To use it might cost you the postage back but you could at least return it if, after a week or two, you absolutely can't get on with the '50s neck.

I've been playing this guitar for a good part of today- clean setting, a slight of touch analog delay and a bit of chorus. What a tone! Made a nice change from the gritty overdrive I usually like. Who needs a strat?

According to the product specialist at the USA plant you can use Luthiers Choice fretboard conditioner or Lemon oil to clean the baked maple fingerboards.

Got mine yesterday (honeyburst with dark back) and love it - easy to play and sounds great.

 

However, I had band practise for three hours tonight and when I got home and took the guitar out of its case I noticed that a lot of the paint had flaked from the back with the natural wood showing through. I'm assuming the dark paint was flaking off because the guitar was rubbing against my jean's waistband. Is this normal? Paint has not flaked off any of my other guitars I own and i'm worried it's all going to start coming away.

 

Does anyone have any advice as I love the guitar apart from this!

Have my eyes on these but a few questions.

 

Satin honey burst.....does this come with the pick guard attached? Thought I read somewhere that you have to drill holes and attach yourself.

 

I've read about some quality issues such as weak toggle switches...anyone have any quality issues to be aware of?

Not sure where you're getting this information, as it's all incorrect. Pickguard is attached, and toggle switch is Switchcraft, U.S.A., which is pretty much as good as it gets, in terms of toggles. I'd be surprised if ANYBODY has any issues with the toggles.

Im having the same problem with mine!! i dont even wear belts and it still has started flaking. Sent an email to gibson about it, hopefully something can get resolved

I've read on other sites that this is seemingly a widespread issue, I will not be ordering one of these, that's for sure. For 900 bucks the paint should stick.

There were some people unhappy with the looks of their Tribute 50s and 60s because they received Heavy Worn models which are "factory Worn" heavily, thus not really nicely done.

 

I have an almost (1 month old) brand new Tribute 50s with humbuckers. It is the Honeyburst, Dark Back, Toasted Maple fingerboard model and I very pleased with it. So far no flaws.

I have one of the first run natural backs with the rosewood fretboard. It has a beautiful finish with no signs at all of any fading or flaking.

@AlanH : I unfortunately had no chance to get one from the first run with natural back and Worn Honeyburst top like yours.

Pity because I love it. And yours is extremely nice.
