scoid
Hi All, What exactly is the difference between Classic '57s and Burstbuckers I, II, III?
scoid
Thanks Yoshi. So the Burstbuckers are all Alnico 5, and the '57s are Alnico 2, correct? Also, were original PAFs potted in wax?
scoid
OK. So the only diffrerences are wax and the amount of windings. Thanks again Joe. Anyone know if original PAFs were Alnico 2, or Alnico 5?
TattooedCarrot
BB's = gritty 57 Classics = smooth
scoid
[-(/ the original PAF pickups had alnico 2 first then later moved to alnico 4 or gradually........j Do you have any idea what they would have used (2,3,4, or 5) circa 1959? Also, is it correct that replacement Burstbuckers are potted but Burstbuckers that come in Historic guitars are not, or is it the other way around? Custom Admin
BBs that come in Historics are potted. orignally, the aftermarket versions were unpotted, but i think that has changed...
ibis
Great info here, only a couple of things I can add: Classics have balanced windings between the two bobbins, Burstbuckers are unbalanced (unequal amounts of wire on each bobbin in the pickup). This is because the original PAFs were wound 'until full', not for a certain number of windings. This gives the BB's a grittier tone with more bite compared to the smoother Classics. I also find the BB's have more midrange grunt. Classic '57s came out in late 1980's I think.
LPDEN
If you want to hear the '57's in all their glory, check out the LP-295 Guitar of the month. Man, I have to tell you that guitar is really growing on me! But I'd take the '58 Std VOS every time...
