Silverbursted
OK, the bug has definitely bit. I have been finding myself looking at reissues again. Most of you know I already have an R7, but am now considering getting something a little newer, like a 58 or 59. So as I'm rummaging around I keep coming across the term Brazilian Rosewood fret board on the R8. Does anyone know if the original 58 Standards had this type of fret board? Or was this something that was only available for a short period of time? And why am I not seeing this on the R9?
myspace.com/jessenoah
the 50s bursts has brazillian fretboards, it is now a protected wood, so the brazillian reissues are more valued because they are rare-er and "better" because of their wonderfully textured fretbaords
Thundergod
beware of the brazilian fake from MLP... (dont know if you read that thread... this guy had forged a "brazilian reissue" using a less valuable reissue).
AXE®
Braz is also a superior tone wood with a natural waxy feel to it. there is an R8 I know about right now thats a killer deal...

Col F
Generally, when Brazilian rosewood became "endangered", East Indian rosewood became the de facto material. This also applied to the fine acoustic guitars with rosewood backs and sides, like most Martins... The old, Brazilian rosewood Martins also have much higher values... There is still some Brazilian used however, and the premium price scares away the meek.
AXE®
Looking for it now. Whoops... Not a Braz... SRV-Zeppelin
If you want an R8, you should get the best R8 ever made... GuitarJunkie's mapleburst! Oh, how I love Canadian Gibsons...
Tim Plains
Read this SB. http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/historics-reissues/23998-r9-braz-r8.html If you're going to buy a reissue with a Brazilian board, be prepared to spend up to an additional $2,000 for it. Gibson made more Brazilian R9s than R8s. 2003, I think. If you love that R7 and keep it, you could always send it to Historic Makeovers and they'll make that puppy identical to a real '50s LP. http://www.historicmakeovers.com/ Anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500.
