  1. Personally, I'm dubious about purchasing anything as expensive as a guitar can get  online, especially since there's so many "porch pirates" these days and FedEX along with UPS no longer knock on your door when they deliver stuff.  Lord knows how long it may sit out there before I head out the door to go somewhere and THEN notice the delivery on my porch.  IF it's still there, that is.

My wife used to have her liquid food delivered to the house from the infusion company via UPS.  In the warmer weather it was OK, but if too cool to leave the front door open  I wouldn't discover the delivery until I went out the door to go to the store for something.  [huh]  Besides......

I don't own a lot of guitars and see no intelligent reason why I should own more than what I need,  so I'd likely prefer to find what I like at a "brick and mortar" store where I could give it a "test drive" before purchasing it.  If you live in some kind of rural area where the nearest "brick and mortar" store might be miles and miles away, I could get the online buying thing.  And over the years on iNet forums(such as this) I've often read good things about Sweetwater and Musician's Friend.  [wink]

Yeah, Neil  liked to record on the spot with little rehearsing apparently, hence a lot of his stuff sounds raw and not very polished. Personally, I love this idea, but for a lot of people it sounds unfinished I guess. If you listen to the album Tonight's the Night from 1973 there are a lot of mistakes, out of tune singing and poor time keeping, but that's what makes it unique in my opinion.

"Out of tune singing" pretty well sums up the majority of Young's vocal output.

Not really a fan either. There were maybe two or three tunes of his I ever liked.    Most of my friends liked his HARVEST album, but mostly because the texture of the paper used on it's cover was good for cleaning their stash [wink]

    what is MARS or GC?

MARS is MARS MUSIC, which is much like a Guitar Center set-up.  But MARS only has one location in the Metro Detroit area, while GC(guitar center) has several.  I haven't been to MARS in several years so for all I know it could have been taken over and is a Guitar Center now. [cool]

  5. I would suppose different people would have different takes on this.  My only experience with both models is picking at both at either MARS or GC.  I found(and for me) the Dove had more depth or "boom" to the sound and was bigger to hold and handle.  The Martin was a cleaner, rich tone.  But that's based on MY ears, and not YOURS.  If you live anywhere near that carries both(like GC maybe) you could have already found this out.   If not, this is all I can offer.

Okay ... back to the Hall of Shame topic at hand:

As many of you are already aware (sorry for that), I am the resident Supertramp apologist here ... a mantle I fully accept as they are strongly in my top-5 favorite bands, for sure.  But how on God's green earth can a band that has sold in the area of 80 million albums with tons of hits worldwide, along with always being named on "top-50 albums of all time" lists not even be in the conversation for the HoF???  It is mind boggling to me, and, honestly, quite infuriating.  Supertramp was an awesome mix between prog, straight-up rock, and pop with brilliant musicianship, singing, and songwriting -- and they did it over many albums, with huge success.  They are still being used in commercials currently.  The HoF has accepted Rush, Yes, and the Moody Blues.  Next should be Supertramp.  And Supertramp is not heavy metal ... you would think they would get in just cause of that!!!!

Sure.  I get ya.   I wouldn't put them in my top 5, but pretty damn close.  [wink]  As far as the HoF is concerned, I'll agree they should have been inducted long ago.  WAY before Donna Summer, Madonna and Janet Jackson.   My Supertramp collection is pretty anemic.  Just "Crisis?  What Crisis?"  and "Breakfast In America".   I should get on the stick and beef it up more.  Not sure, but I think they were the first(if not the only) rock band to use CrO2  recording tape near the waning days of analog recording. Pretty revolutionary for the times, anyway.

  7. Y'know Butch, if your mobility was normal all that time, there would have been nothing wrong with walking a few times around the block daily or riding a bike(if you have one) as  Covid really didn't keep folks from being outside.  I'd give anything just to be able to walk upright painlessly farther than 20-25 yards.    But some time ago, I made up a list of what defines an atypical American frame of mind.  Number one on the list----

"Many Americans will spend upwards of one half an hour driving around a lot,  trying to find the closest parking space so they won't have too far to walk into the health club where they'll spend the next 45 minutes on a treadmill!"  [wink]

Another old euphemism that made it into 20th century R*B and Rock and Roll:  Jelly Roll.

Yep.  Another slang vay-jay reference.   And too, when the man sang(in a blues tune I can't recall the title of) "Im going downtown/ Just to get my hambone boiled."  [wink]  A real ham bone wasn't what was meant.

And didn't The Supremes sing something about a "Drug Child"?

  10. Ah, we're all grown ups here(by age anyway  [wink])  you could have posted that "rock'n'roll" was once the "urban" (PC for "black")  slang for the sex act.  From around the mid -'40's to the early '50's.   Incidentally, years before that ,  JAZZ was once slang for it too.  And by the way......  (and even earlier it was "jass"  before jazz [see below].

Those of us who've come of age in the '60's might recall that one slang term for sex that was popular was "ball"  (you might recall the Led Zeppelin lyric, "I got a woman like to ball all day").  Which begs the question.....

What DID Little Richard mean when he said, "Good golly, Miss Molly/  Sure like to BALL"?   [omg]

  11. Can't pick a "favorite" but like some JUST a bit more. Like:

For The Roses" and "Hejira".   "Court And Spark" is on their heels though, and my favorite track on it is "Just Like This Train".  Like DYLAN, Joni was great at writing lyrics with vivid mental images.

Ok, I broke down and signed up for a Gibson. I must have got 5 mails to sign up and the saying goes, "If you don't sign up, you can't win is true."

[wink]  I'll bet many of those PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE contestants will argue with that!  They sign up month after month for year after year and most have never won a THING!  [cool]

A brother in law of mine has been waiting for near 20 years now.

Here are this years lot. Foo Fighters, Tina Turner, JAY-Z, Todd Rundgren, The Go-Go’s, and Carole King.

Love Todd. Carole had one stellar album and is a great songwriter. Tina is a legend. The rest eat chain.

Both Carol AND Tina are legends.  Many of rock's early hits( and beyond) were co-written by Carol and then husband Gerry Goffin.  That it took this long for Carol to get into any musical hall of fame is the puzzle.

I can agree about the others.  I've heard not much difference(from what I've heard) between The Foo Fighters and other contemporary  bands like GREEN DAY and Smashing Pumpkins.

I think the HOF sealed their coffin years ago when Janet Jackson got in.

Some (like me) would say that seal was set years earlier in 2008 when Madonna was inducted.   ABBA's in their too and I've long questioned that as well.

And I can go along with SARGE's idea of Rap and Hip-Hop having their own Hall of Fame.  I'm not any racial segregationist, but rock'n'roll and rap do seem to be much different genres from one another.  But, if some people feel that calling comic books "graphic novels"   is OK,  others might then feel that anything goes.  But too, if you think about it,   without rock'n'roll, there'd BE no rap or hip-hop.  [cool]

What price are you talking about?

Well, Butch was mentioning  that some music dealer in Nebraska was giving a guitar away per week  but at a discounted price.  (Check his post on Monday)  I merely replied that if ANY price was involved, discount or not, that it really isn't a "giveaway".   I'm not sure what Dietze  is trying to pull.

  15. I'll settle for a new coach.  [wink]   I never thought Blashill was the guy.

Anyway, back on track, I've got a few CDs of that station's parodies.   They did a lot of them back in the '90's.  I haven't listened too much to the station since then so don't know if they're keeping it up.
