SG special headstock 'peeling'

Not a major problem but i've had my SG special limited for about a year and 2 months now (so not long) and just realised that around one of the tuners the sorting of 'coating' (not very good with technical terms) has flaked away, I haven't hit it in that spot so kind of wondering why it's done that and if it'll do it more as time goes by...

Looks like the turner assembly got tightened a bit too much at the factory or perhaps the finish got lifted a bit when the tuning post was pushed through, resulting in damage to the finish. Gibson is very picky about warranty finish repairs - they've got a disclaimer for finish problems in their warranty. But, if you take it to an authorized repair shop for inspection, Gibson might decide to cover this repair under warranty.

Another thread with same situation - http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/78913-headstock-blemish/

Cheers for the quick reply man, yeah I had a feeling it might be something along those lines, just seems a bit rubbish on Gibson's behalf to have something like that happen on a guitar that isn't exactly cheap haha. Guess i'll take it to a repair shop and see what they have to say and possibly try sort this with Gibson directly. Very annoying!

I've seen Les Paul Custom's and SG Custom's, with the same kind of problem.

Around the tuners, or where the "Gibson" inlay is. Gibson DID NOT cover those,

under warranty. And, they were "babied" guitars, too...not abused, at all!

So...???

Good Luck, I hope you have better results, with Gibson, on this issue. They've

always been good, to me, on other issues. But, they didn't cover my friend's

similar guitar finish problems.

Hi, Louis! CB is correct. I have a CS-336, which is a Custom Shop guitar. I've got some peeling around the Gibson MOP logo and the MOP crown in the center (MOP = Mother of Pearl).

It's a drag, especially on a guitar that expensive. I don't have a digital camera, otherwise I could take a photo and show you what I mean. Good luck getting yours fixed. Paul.

  • 2 weeks later...

A good luthier should be able to fix that without too much cost.......

I got a second hand LP that had the back finish RIPPED UP by a cowboy belt buckle. It cost 100$ to get it fixed. I'd think your issue would be 50-75$
