sellen Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 So i bought this model in 2011, i instantly liked the sound and how the neck was but there was some flaws. Like look at this rough fretboard, it's like this all over and you feel it with your fingers The nut was tight as a v..... Two of the tuners was bad The bevel at the upper horn is a bit roughly done, and there is a very visible seem at the body All this made me put it away until a couple a weeks ago. Was thinking about it, and remembered that it was my lightest sg. That's a sign for good tonewood, isn't it? Or is that just a myth Anyway decided to put some love in the guitar New Groover tuners Alu stopbar Faber abr bridge Bone nut Witch hat knobs Amber switch tip Don't know if it's the new honeymoon but she sure sounds great know. Again it's without doubt the lightest sg i felt in my hands, and i feel that it has it's own sound from that. I'm pretty sure the Bone nut- Alu Stopbar - Abr Bridge had a positive effect on the sound, but i guess most of ya think that's "snakeoil" Don't know why i tell ya all this, just felt for it Anyway if others have the same model, please tell your story how you like it and post pick if you got
sgplayers Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Real Nice, I didn't think I would want the 24 fret 50th anniversary S-G when I had the chance to get one, but I wish I would have checked one out now. Lucky guy. Any way i just wanted to say my 2011 S-G standard with the 61 fast neck has the same weird feeling and fuzzy to the touch finger board. It plays ok but feels weird.
RowdyMoon Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Nice one mate...I personally think witch hats on SG's should be standard issue again..they just look so right on those guitars.!!
rct Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I have one. It is stupid light. Flawless example of a Gibson guitar, I love it. rct
jaygl Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Here's mine with my 1977 Standard.... Changed the plastics to cream for a bit, but she's back to stock right now.... And a couple live shots..... Her and I rocking the Pheonix Concert Hall in Toronto opening for Slaughter last year.... I've had a bone nut installed since I couldn't get the stock nut to stop going sharp on some of the strings....and had swapped out the stock tuners for some grovers....love my 2011 Standard 24!!!! Anyone who got one of these is very lucky IMHO....one of the nicest and best sounding gibby's i've ever personally played/owned.

Thanx man, guess they had some of that fret boards back in '11 I have one. It is stupid light. Flawless example of a Gibson guitar, I love it. rct This model might be a featherwight Sg then Rockin' picks jaygl
sg50 Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Peculiar fret board on yours... when does the serial date back to? Gibson was raided in August, 2011. I wonder if yours was stamped after that. Mine dates to March 2011, and my fret board is smooth. I love this guitar. It's light, just as yours is. When I bought it my feeling was that it's the best of the old and the best of the new. Good carving, small pick guard, 57s, small headstock, 24 frets... delicious. I haven't opened it up, but I believe it's hand-wired (as opposed to PCB). Can either of you confirm that and save me the trouble of opening it up? Mine's stock... well, I swapped the selector knob tip to black on mine. It shipped with cream, which is fine, but Gibson's www promos had black, and I like the look of it. I like the look of sellen's antique too. I haven't changed the knobs, but if I were to do so, I'd probably choose speed knobs over witch hats. They feel faster to my hand, probably because they offer a little more leverage, but I'm good with the stock. The 2013 Original looked good too... I'd probably have gone for that if I didn't have the 50th. Truth be told, my Casino gets more action because it lives on a stand and the SG is in a case. (it's convenient and I'm lazy) The Casino has P90s in it and that makes me giddy for an SG with P90s. If that butterscotch SG comes back with P90s, I'll be... well... I'll be poorer. But I'm still very pleased with the SG24. I'm glad I was looking at the time and it didn't pass me by!
sgplayers Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Mine dates march 2011 also 107610352 and the fret board is as I said not rough but fuzzy is the best description.
sgplayers Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Mine dates march 2011 also 107610352 and the fret board is as I said not rough but fuzzy is the best description. also I had to replace the brass nut on the truss rod because it takes a strong man to get it to .012 neck relief. I have wanted to return it but haven't found a dealer close to me yet or the time. My other Gibson's are great guitars but this one shouldn't have got out of the factory. (In my Opinion).
sellen Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 Mine is also march '11 The fretboard was a big deal in the beginning, now i really don't care that much. You have to get close to spot it, and it doesn't affect the playing. Funny thing the guitar that was put away 3 years are suddenly my nr 1 It's a drag with that Truss rod "sgplayers" What could cause that? Like "jaygl" says, it's hand wired "sg50"
Paul P. Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 So i bought this model in 2011, i instantly liked the sound and how the neck was but there was some flaws. Like look at this rough fretboard, it's like this all over and you feel it with your fingers Sellen, I have a regular, i.e. not 50th Anniversary Model, Gibson SG Standard (Cherry Heritage) that had the same fret-board issue as you designate with yours. I thought it was odd too, as I've had other Gibson guitars with Rosewood fret-boards that were smoother. I don't know what the deal is, but over time, the areas where I play the most have gotten smoother. Anyone out there have a clue as to why mine and Sellen's fret-boards were rougher than the status quo?

Like look at this rough fretboard, it's like this all over and you feel it with your fingers That rosewood looks really shiny, did you put anything on it? It almost looks like lacquer of some kind or linseed oil. If so, that might cause a problem like that.

If so, that might cause a problem like that. No i was like that when i got it. Have used lemon oil a couple of times. I did clean it up for the picks so you guys don't have to see my finger dirt (Small amount with lemon oil, wiped away at once) Again it was like that, but i really don't care that much anymore as she really sounds good. G The pain in the *** now is a Bone nut i installed a couple a days ago. Did't glue it right away, it was no problem playing it with the string tension holding it in place. Did the gluing today and somehow the low E string is just a tiny little tad to low the first fret. The 5 other strings are perfect, ahhh there's always has to be something Well wasted energy getting mad, just have to order a new bone nut. Well let me order a couple so i can f... up one more

DiamondJig Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I have an AMS Exclusive, it's a SG 24 standard that came with a full face PG, a mini in the neck and an Iommi in the bridge. But she is really a 50th anv left over body that they converted in to these Exclusive's for AMS. Under the PG are all the holes for the PU rings and small PG and the headstock is blank. The fret board is smooth no problems at all. Mine shows 102810XXX
Paul P. Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 So is yours to a 2011 model maybe? Sellen, I meant to note that, but obviously forgot. Yes, my SG Standard is a 2011 model. It was made in March of that year.
