What does R mean?

"R" is for "Reissue", and the number is the last digit of the year of the model year being reissued.

So an R9 is a reissue of the 1959 model specifications, an R8 is 1958, R0 is 1960, etc.

Please excuse my ignorance but I see in a lot of forums that people speak of Gibson guitars (Les Paul I believe) as R6 or R7 of R8 etc.

What does that mean?

The R is for reissue. So to give an example, and R9 would be a '59 reissue.

CORRECT!

R2 ('52 Reissue)

R4 ('54 Reissue)

R6 ('56 Reissue)

R7 ('57 Reissue)

R8 ('58 Reissue)

R9 ('59 Reissue)

R0 ('60 Reissue)

There was no R1, as the Les Paul was not released until 1952, and in 1961/62 it was replaced by what is now the SG.

Never seen an R3 or R5; I don't think they make them. It's possible that the models weren't developed in these years, so the 1953 Les Paul was the same as the 1952, and the same again for the 1955 being covered by 1954. Someone please correct me, if I'm mistaken, though.

Hello Denitronik and welcome to the Forums!

Hello TM_Fisher!

There is R5 and it had some fancy Hot Mod variations too. (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-Custom/1955-Les-Paul-Custom-Exclusives.aspx)

Also, missing from the list are the '68 and '74 Les Paul Reissues, however, I never seen anyone referring to them as R68 or R74.

Cheers... Bence

Oh, Bence! You internet wizard you! Google failed me!

And now that I've seen the R5, and the simple word "limited"; I immediately want one. Even the HCS is appealing, despite my distaste for the finish!

I've not heard of the other two; the '68 and '74, though; some research is in order! Is the '74 a Les Paul Deluxe, per chance?

These are the Historic Reissues (aka Historic Collection). You can check what's been released at the Historic Les Paul Database by checking the "Select model" drop down box. A pretty surprising list.

Most people associate the Historic Reissues with Les Paul models, but there are others. The current (although Gibson's webpages are seldom up to date) Historic Reissues can be seen here - http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Gibson-Custom.aspx?ProductGroup=Historic_Collection

Thank You! :D

I couldn't find the official pages, hope this will do too...

The 1968 Les Paul Reissue: http://www.themusiczoo.com/product/3740/Gibson-Custom-Shop-68-Les-Paul-Custom-VOS-Ebony/

The 1974 Les Paul Reissue (version 1 with period-correct AlNiCo III "Super Humbuckers" and witchhats): http://www.themusiczoo.com/product/12623/Gibson-Custom-Shop-74-Les-Paul-Custom-VOS-Electric-Guitar-Aspen-White/

...and there is a version 2 with 490/498 pickups and reflector knobs. The Deluxe has been reissued in early 00s.

Cheers... Bence

I saw what Thomann called a 55ri. It was one of the less common, all gold gold tops. At the time I assumed Gibson were differentiating the all gold ones. Of course, back in the day, they did it to cover something unsightly on the back or neck.

Edit: I typed all this hours before but didn't hit post. I see Bence beat me to it in the meantime.

Cheers, Bence. Some nice-looking Customs there, although I'm certainly not keen on those control knobs on the Alpine White (if you can call it that) '74.

Did you have a link for the Thomann page? I had a browse but couldn't find it?

Hello!

Yes, You can call it a `74. Pancake body, 3-piece voluted neck, AlNiCo IIIs.

I don`t like the witch-hats either. Regardless of that, this is the sexiest LPC in my opinion. :)

Haha; I meant if you can call it white, not a '74! [tongue]

But they are some attractive LP's.

It is called "Aspen white" - which is...well...yellow. :D

Cheers... Bence

Inspired by Frank Zappa's "Don't Eat That Yellow Snow" ;)

It was years ago, 2010 probably.

Ahh, no worries. It would be an interesting read, so I'll do some internet hunting!
