I once came upon a Ram crying his eyes out on the side of the road. I asked him why he was crying…he answered that he had just heard the saddest song and it brought him to tears. I asked him what the song was, and he told me, "There will never be another Ewe"……….for him…this has to be the saddest song….

This is probably sadder and more poignant because it hits me on a personal level, but:

"Sometimes I’d listen outside her door

And I’d hear how my mother cried for him

I pray for her even more than me"

Luther Vandross - Dance With My Father

Listening in shuffle mode lately, I came across Emmylou's cover off James Taylor's The Millworker.

Serious contender, that one:

"But it's my life's been wasted and I have been the fool

To let this manufacturer use my body for a tool.

I can ride home in the evening, staring at my hands

Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl ought to stand

A better chance.

So may I work the mills just as long as I am able

And never meet the man whose name is on the label.

And it's me and my machine for the rest of the morning,

for the rest of the afternoon,

for the rest of my life."

Waiting Around To Die by Townes Van Zandt. I saw him play this on Heartworn Highways documentary. He was playing a red J-45. I bought one the next day.

Sometimes I don't know where this dirty road is taking me

Sometimes I can't even see the reason why

I guess I keep on gamblin', lots of booze and lots of ramblin'

It's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

One-time friends I had a ma, I even had a pa

He beat her with a belt once cause she cried

She told him to take care of me, she headed down to Tennessee

It's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

I came of age and found a girl in a Tuscaloosa bar

She cleaned me out and hit it on the sly

I tried to kill the pain, I bought some wine and hopped a train

Seemed easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

A friend said he knew where some easy money was

We robbed a man and brother did we fly

The posse caught up with me, drug me back to Muskogee

It's two long years, just a-waitin' 'round to die

Now I'm out of prison, I got me a friend at last

He don't steal or cheat or drink or lie

His name's codeine, he's the nicest thing I've seen

Together we're gonna wait around and die
