Make Your Own Humbucker

Very cool!

But come on' date=' it's not rocket surgery...[/quote']

The way NASA's budget is going we may very well need old CD cases to help put spacecraft together. Better yep, I'll use the whole CD itself. I knew I'd find a use for my old Tiffany and Debbie Gibson CDs someday...=;

You know I spent 15 years in Houston, right?

Did alot of crane work at NASA, met lotsa people who worked there.

If the American people want to see money REALLY get wasted, that's one agency they should see inside out.

Why?

I'm not saying NASA is the culprit, it's the gov't funding them.

It's the Yo-Yo bullsh!t of fat funding and rolling out big plans only to slash and burn the budgets and waste all that work.

We always joked about the housing market in Clear Lake - NASA is cutting so you can buy a nice house cheap.

They bring in lotsa contractors as budgets grow, then hire more people and the house prices jump.

Rolling along just fine, then the gov't slashes the budgets one more time.

So, they start over on everything they do every other day and piss away HUGE sums of money every time.

JUST FUND THE DAMNED THING, leave them alone and let them do what they do best!

I know of no other organization that lives and dies by such extreme measures with each Congressional session.....

Well Neo, as usual, you hit it right on the head! I know Chris Scolese (now acting Administrator since Mike Griffin left) very well and he'd agree with 100%. One day it's Mission to Planet Earth, the next it's "smaller, cheaper, faster" (Chris told me that everyone of those missions conceived by Goldin was either lost on-orbit or killed on the ground...Goldin was reacting to a big budget cut and did the best he could with it). the next it's space station, the next it's formation flying technology, today it's Mars, and so on. I did a little lobbying on congress a few times and mentioned a lot of what you said here. One thing we pushed was to have space station be a separate (from NASA) line item on the federal budget because it sucked the crap out of NASA's general budget. There is a lot of frustration by upper management because the feds are micromanaging them. I did see a lot of this while I worked there and even now while I'm a professor working on NASA projects. I actually almost walked away from a huge grant from JSC because of some of the crap you mentioned.

NASA does hire the best and the brightest (OK, well they made a mistake with me but nobody is perfect...he he he), but with no clear vision it'll be tough to moved it forward. Those engineers can build a few humbuckers though...LOL! I'll give a try and see what happens.

BTW, my wife and I loved going to Clear Lake and Kemah. I'd go down there from A&M at least 2-3 times a month for meetings at JSC and brought her with me.

Found this great website on how to make your own humbucker. I love the way he uses an old CD case to help make the bobbins...

OK, but why would anyone want to build their own Humbucker... Do you think you could build one better than Gibson or Seymoure Duncan or any other specialist? It is cool though...

Well sometimes the best things come from the "average" person just playing around. I have an undergraduate student who came up with a novel idea for navigation of space vehicles, which no other specialist (including me) thought of before. He's going to file for a patent on the idea. Look what Burt Rutan did that no big company did before (flew around the world non-stop and also won the Ansari X Prize for launching a reusable manned spacecraft into space twice within two weeks).

that's the attitude that kills american industry. when someone stands up and says, hell no i'm not paying $100 for some wire wound around poles and held together with plastic, that's when we suceed. just because its made by seymoure duncan, doesn't mean what i make is not as good or better. that's why custom guitars cost more than what they are mimicking.

also, amen to everyone telling the government to leave nasa be. cut the budget kills the future of technology. the medical community as we know it would not exist had the government cut programs from nasa. let them run wild with our money. if i could choose where my tax dollars went, i would take them from medicare and give it to nasa.

Somebody's trollin' hard to make a thread about home-made humbuckers into a NASA-hating.

Just sayin' - keep those non-connected drive-bys coming.

And back on point, I suspect that one could very well make a pickup that sounds as good or better than the big-name companies. How do you suppose they did it?
