Todays ebay fake.

I have had a considerable change in my frame of mind in regards to fakes ... or in particular, the reporting/hunting of or for them. My reasons are essentially twofold:

1). I'm not personally benefiting from the time spent on doing so. My time, frankly, is more valuable spent other ways ... either working on my own business (as opposed to doing free work for Gibson) ... or, if I do have free time to spend, I'd prefer spending it playing, or w/my girlfriend & friends, or even spending a little time online on forums or whatever.

2) Gibson doesn't really seem to care, so why should I? If I were to write to Gibson and tell them that a rival firm had copied my ideas and implemented them into their business practices and that I'd like some help in putting a stop to it, what do you think their response would be? Likely something along the lines of "that's a shame ... good luck to you on that" (and what do you think the chances of even receiving a response like that would be?). I love my LP ... it's a true friend to me ... but Gibson on the other hand, is a company that sold it to me. I have loyalty, but it's not blind. And I hate to say it, but if Gibson were to write to me at work asking for my help, my response would be in the form of a contract in which we'd benefit financially. Time = money.

For a while I got myself wound up thinking about it ... and in truth, it was because I felt particularly bad for a couple of guys who came on here with fakes. I'm happy to discuss them when people come on and bring a particular one they are considering purchasing, or having already purchased, to see if it's a fake ... but sweating creeps on ebay just bores me to tears ... unless of course you pay me :)

If I stumble upon a Fake Gibson...I will/have certainly report it. No effort...just an E-mail....Simple.

Bear in mind that U.S. Law is not GLOBAL...A site that I reported is still operational...its in China.....what is Gibson to do?

02005561 - isn't that the common fake Les Paul serial number?

I don't think that fake is any better than the other fake Customs we see.

It still has all the usual traits of a fake.

Yup, plus the one from yesterday was 562 and the other one from today is 563. I pity the poor sod who tries to sell a genuine LP starting 02005........

Hi,

New to the forum. Would appriciate any assistance please guys. I am looking at a Les Paul standard, looks the real deal to me, but the serial number has eight digits and starts with a six. From browsing the net for various explanations of Gibson serial numbers I cannot find anything about these eight digit numbers that start with a six. Using the 1st and 5th digit, the year comes back as a '69, but from what I can tell, the eight digit serial method started in the '70's.

Anyone know what I have here? I haven't bought it... yet, so feel free to be brutally honest.

Thanks in advance.

Really? Thanks FennRx. Is there any chance you could tell me why? You seem quite certain. There is no mention of 8 digit serial numbers that start with a 6 on gibsons extensive pdf files explaining serial numbers. Have I missed something?

I would be interested in learning more about this, as I struggle to believe that it was actually made in '69. The vendor says he bought it new 12-13 years ago. It has the made in usa stamp, and the number is stamped into the wood i.e. it is not a transfer.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, about the photo quality. I am also aware of the headstock breakage. I just want to know if it is the real deal. Any ideas?

Thanks

  • 4 weeks later...

And here's the latest eBay fake - Item number: 300318669379

Yet another serial number 02005561 and I'm sure a fairly convincing Gibson to the uneducated eye with an offer of £1800 or so ready in their back pocket. I've reported it but I don't know how long eBay take to sort these things.

Looks real' date=' kind of, if the asking price is good then go for it.

If you want a china guitar, buy a good epiphone, or a good schecter.
