mcmurray
How to solo; 1. Listen to the backing track. 2. Hear a melody in your head. 3. Play that melody. #3 is the hard part, but can be learned, there are tools that will help you achieve this. As soon as you start basing your solos on fretboard patterns and not sounds, you're screwed and it will never sound good.

zigzag
I think you guys are right, but I think you're oversimplifying the process. If you want to play what you want to play, or you want to be able to improvise over a melody, you had better have a good understanding of the fretboard. An artist must be in tune with his medium before he can use it most effectively.
mcmurray
you had better have a good understanding of the fretboard I agree. But having an understanding is not enough. One needs to link their ear to the fretboard. Here's one way of going about this; http://www.jsguitarforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56336
