I'm sure it's been discussed already' date=' but what was Jeff Bridges playing in Crazy Heart..........looks like a J 45 but with a pointy pickgard, anyone know for sure?[/quote']

It's a (late '50s-early '60s) J-45. They had pointy pickguards then.

There was something unusual about his Gibson in that movie. I'm looking at it thinking post 54 J45 but if you look closely it has the double ring rosette like post 61's have and like all SJ's have. It is definately a post 54 to 1960 model. I'm thinking it's a SJ body with a J45 neck. Did anybody else catch this oddity ?

howdy -

there's an interview with jeff in guitar aficionado vol 2, no.1 and he talks about the guitars used in the film.

http://www.guitaraficionado.com/

in the article it says it's a Gibson SJ-45 that belongs to Buddy Miller who plays on the soundtrack.

when I first read the article I was kinda puzzled by the "SJ", since I too had it pegged for a 58-62-ish git box.

they also mention that the gretsch was custom built for him.

either way, cool guitars.

yeah, kind of a bummer about the site... I tried to find it online first,

but had to refer to the actual magazine again.

I recently picked up this fantastic book: http://www.amazon.com/Gibsons-Fabulous-Flat-Top-Guitars-Illustrated/dp/0879302976

On page 57 blues player Rev Robert Wilkins is playing an identical J-45 to the Crazy Heart guitar...

double rosette, large pickguard, silkscreened Gibson logo on the headstock.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few J-45's maybe made it out of the factory with an SJ body.

Your probably right about the body neck switchup at the factory.

Could be the fret board was changed out at some time. Maybe one of the owners liked the guitar but did not care for the larger SJ inlays and put a new board on it. People used to do things like this to guitars !

Now if we could get a good shot of the back side body binding, I know the SJ has more pieces of binding,w/b/w/b/w.

Where the J45 body I believe is one band of white.

I think the SJ's top binding has more lines as well.

Anybody know what year Gibson started putting the crown inlay in the headstock of the SJ's and CW's ?
