lpfan Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I was searching Amazon for guitar parts and came across some chrome p90 pickup covers. I thought that those might look good on my 56' goldtop. Does anybody have a pic of a guitar with p90's and chrome covers on them? I was just curious as to how good it might look.

I have a Gibson goldtop with cream P-90's, and I can't imagine anything other than that color for the pickguard or pickup covers. Dog-ears would certainly look silly on a LP. I would guess that chrome covers would look a bit like standard humbuckers from a distance. You could always photoshop some Casino pickups onto a pic of a goldtop to find out.

Well, maybe....Neil Young's "Old Black" has those (Soap bar P-90 at the neck, and mini-humbucker with chrome or aluminum ring, at the bridge)...although they look more like aluminum, now...they're so scratched up. OR...Maybe they ARE aluminum?! LOL! Anyway, you could "Google" his LP and see if you like that look...might give you the reference you need? CB
Notes_Norton Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 They are not soap-bar, but every Casino I've ever seen has either chrome or nickel covers (I really can't tell the difference). A little photo-shop and you can mask out the dog-ears. Notes
lpfan Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 Thanks "Notes" I like the chrome p-90 look. I think I'm gonna get a set of covers for my 56 goldtop. There pretty cheap so if I decide I don't like them its not a big loss really.
Lord Summerisle Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 They are not soap-bar' date=' but every Casino I've ever seen has either chrome or nickel covers [/quote'] They started off with black plastic covers, would you believe? I guess Keef was the most famous player of one of these models:
Notes_Norton Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 They started off with black plastic covers' date=' would you believe? [/quote'] You are correct. I have seen pictures of them with the black covers, but I've never seen either an ES-330 or a Casino in person with the black covers. However, the recently re-issued ES-330 comes with black covers. Personally, I like the chrome better. Notes
charlie brown Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Well, I've owned and/or played both the Casino, and an ES-330. I like the 330 WITH black pickup covers. But, I prefer the Casino with chrome or nickel. But I think, in all honesty, it's because that's what "The Beatles" guitars had, and why I (initially, in 1966) bought a Casino in the first place. It wasn't until after I played it for some time that I really understood the reason they bought theirs. I never owned both, at the same time, like Bob does...so, it would be interesting to see how they compare, tone wise, if the Casino retains it's metal covers, and the 330 had the black plastic covers. Since there is (supposed) to be a noticable difference in tone, that way... CB

If so, funny how the model changed so quickly. Here is Keith Richard's 1961 Casino (in the hands of Brian Jones): Black plastic pick-up covers, and Epiphone "e" vibrola. It's a shame we can't the headstock properly, but I'm guessing it's Gibson shaped. And here's McCartney's Casino. As with Keith's, it seems to be in the "wrong hands" when this photo was taken(!) Nickel P90 covers and a Bigsby.
clarkuss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Paul McCartney's serial number is 84075 and although he bought it in 1964 I think that does make it a 1962
charlie brown Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Paul's is a '62! www.thecanteen.com/mccartney5.html CB
clarkuss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I had that great beatles gear book at one time but lent it to the old guitarist in my band and haven't seen it in about a year and a half. Absolutely gutted! Would come in handy from time to time. May have to invest in another one...
jrich44 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 i have a friend who has that book its very good also CB that website is great for looking at the Beatles guitars :)
clarkuss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I have a small library of beatles books that I've inherited (stolen, borrowed) from my dad who was a paul mccartney tribute artist for about 15 years and that one about their instruments is one of my faves.
jrich44 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 it certainly is a good read it says where they got them doesnt it? correct me if im wrong.
clarkuss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Yeah it tells you where the guitars came from, in some cases how much they cost (or didn't cost if they go them on hire purchase or bian epstein paid for them). Great read and some cool pictures too! I bought it back in Bristol a few years ago when I was visiting my girlfriend and read it all the way back to glasgow on the long haul in a national express

You'd have had time to read the Encyclopedia Britannica from cover to cover... By the way. Is that you in the bath, or Pete Doherty?
clarkuss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I was very poor! Couldn't afford to travel by train. It was horrible though. That's me in the bath. I'm going to change that picture now... haha.

clarkuss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I think if you've got a good book and a decent packed lunch it makes it a lot easier. Now one can carry around 20GB of music as well which helps. I prefer to travel by train these days but beggers can't be choosers!
clarkuss Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Oops... sorry! In my opinion the gold top looks perfect with the cream covers and I would leave it just as it is!! Not many guitars suit the cream covers but this guitar is certainly one of them. Too nice a guitar to go messing about with.
lpfan Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 I agree with what you are saying. The cream p90's do suit the guitar. I have a friend that has a 71 goldtop with mini-humbickers and I like the way it looks too. I think its a Gibson LP Deluxe. I just thought that If I want to change the look a little I could put the covers on and take them off when I feel like it.
charlie brown Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 That's the great thing (well, one of them), about the LP Deluxe. You can keep those great Mini-humbuckers, OR change them out, to P-90's or P-100's (if you want "noiseless"), without doing any routing. Great guitars, IMHO. CB
