Another new guitar day!

Yes, I wound up getting a Joe Pass. I played the Casinos as well, and they were nice, but I actually felt that the Pass would be more suited to the sort of music I tend to play. And besides, I can always try to find a nice Casino down the line! The one at the store was in natural, too -- I might have been more inclined to get a sunburst like my old one.

Here's the whole thing:

I tried it plugged into my amp (a Roland Cube 60) and fiddled around with it. I was a little confused by the tone on the guitar -- I still need to figure out the pots! And the amp, for that matter - I usually run my Martin and Taylor through the acoustic channel, so using an honest-to-gravy electric geetar is outside my current skill level. If I had just kept my old Bandmaster I'd be in gravy . . . .

I checked over the Pass and the Casino very carefully for finish issues. They seem well put together and I saw only one almost invisible finish flaw on the back (you can actually see it better in the pic of the back). The neck is three piece, plus a heel cap. The neck feels nice and full, and it was easier to play than I expected, given that I am used to 1-3/4 nuts on my acoustics. Still, I am muting a string here and there when I play, so I will need to adjust some. It also sounds remarkably nice without the amp -- it has a decent amount of sustain, although not as much as either acoustic (not too surprising, given the thick lam top). Setup is pretty good as far as I can tell at the moment; the relief is perfect and the action is low. Strings seem ok for now but I bought a new set of D'Addarios to put on later.

I will definitely be replacing that pickguard though! Sheesh, that signature is too much.

There was no serial stamped on the headset. The guitar was made in Indonesia in December last year.

All in all, I think I will be pretty happy with this.

Beautiful guitar...I bet if you used a very mild rubbing compound on the pick guard you can rub the finish out. I had a Joe Pass about 7 years ago, and this was the case. I have not played a newer one so I am unsure if it is still just a silk screened signature on the plastic.

Enjoy it.

Thanks everyone. KD, the signature on this pickguard is deeply engraved into the surface. The pickguard is black-on-white and the signature is the white layer showing through. I don't think I can buff that out! [biggrin] It won't be that big a problem to get a new guard, and I think a mottled brown would look good on this guitar.

I have never seen one like that, the old guard was tortoise shell, and the name was simply screened onto it...was easy to remove. Tortoise looks awesome on the natural, or mottled brown. Always good to make them your own [cool]

Well gang, I just replaced the original strings with some D'Addario XL lights. I figured that if the guitar had sat around a Guitar Center since last December the strings would have been pretty well on their way out. The old strings were noticeably heavier than the new ones as well. I must say, it sounds much better with the D'Addarios, bright and clear. Not to mention substantially easier to play as well!

Still lots to learn about this guitar!
