Making a "Lennon" Casino

I'm not up on Casinos personally, but I think this might help get you pointed in the right direction:

As you can see, there's really only so much you can do parts-wise, other aspects of the "Revolution" are in the construction itself.

Mod away, and post your results when you're done!

There is a guy who sells the black washers on eBay from time to time, but I dont' see any listed at the moment.

I've never really understood the whole "black washer" fascination...

But if someone really has to have one (and this may be an incredibly dumb question) -

but if you take the old one off and take it with you to Ace Hardware / Lowes / Home Depot / your local Mom & Pop hardware store...

...will they not sell you a black washer of the same size for a few cents?

(perhaps the Lennon Estate and Epiphone should team up and sell "Lennon-authorized" black washers at $25 + sales tax...they'd probably still find a lot of buyers) bonk.gif

Man, I love it!!! [lol] I'm sure Yoko Ono would get involved, have Gibson study & measure, and then release a limited edition, signed version of the black washer for $150 (with a portion going to a scholarship for wayward & underprivileged guitar players). Donation portion disclosure (All 5 cents of the $150 going to scholarship). To quote our wonderful (not)Vice President "God love her!"

I was thinking about cutting a circle from the bottom of a black 35mm film can I have for that washer. I like the look, but what the hell was the washer about anyway?

I want to put one on my 1965 Elitist I just got. I notice the pup selector switch likes to pop back to mid-position almost on it's own while playing. Too bad it's not at a part I'd want it to do that. My MIC flips so crappy (feels like it has sand or grit in it P.O.S.) that I don't have that problem.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

If you want your Casino to be like Lennon's you need to do the following:

1. Sand the finish and add a clear coat of varnish

2. Put the Gold Grovers on

3. Take off the pickguard, leave in the screws

4. Get a Corian nut

5. Put on a set of Nylon bridge saddles

6. Add the black washer

7. Get a 2 hole Truss Rod Cover

8. Use Naptha to remove the orange label and get a custom made blue label with John's serial and model numbers on it

9. Have pickups that are wound to vintage spec

10. Get an ace strap

11. Put a wicker ball charm on around the bottom of the headstock with red string

Then belt out Yer Blues

Could just get an inspired by.... couple of questions, where do you get a 2 hole truss rod cover? Is there any tonal difference with Nylon bridge saddles? Are the pickups on the inspired by fine? Whats the point of the wicker ball charm also?

Wow, if all that info's correct, there really isn't much difference between the inspired by and the Elitist casino's aside from country of manufacture.....

At the moment I don't know anyone who produces 2 hole TRC other than Frenchie, a member here, who makes them himself. I'm surprised more people haven't tried to do this on a larger scale like the black rings and blue labels and foil "e" logos because the demand for 2 hole TRC is massive.

The Nylon saddles do make a big sound difference in my opinion. I've just posted a short review in the other Lennonising thread but basically it takes away some the treble and gives is a smoother sound. Not for everyone.

The wicker ball, the ace strap... just extras:

What would you say is the life span of the standard casino? Lifer if treated well or what?

There's no reason why it can't be a lifer if you treat it right. I've had my current ones for 7 years, 4 years and a year but they were all a bit older when I already got them.

On the older models I'd say that the first thing to go is the the selector switch. Other than for Lennon specs i've not modded anything on any of my Casinos other than the selector switch. All the other stuff has held up well.

If it's looked after you shouldn't really have the any problems. The tuners and the bridge are a bit lightweight but a good set up and a well cut nut always make a huge difference.

The good thing as well is that to upgrade a secondhand guitar with some nice tuners, decent bridge and a good set up would probably come in cheaper than a brand new one that probably has a badly cut nut and needs set up anyway so you'd only be forking out for some tuners and a bridge but to be honest I've had the original tuners and bridge on a couple of mine since I got them and they've not caused any major problems. The right set up is the key. It makes a world of difference.

Hi Clarkuss,

I read in the post for the JL look on a Casino, that you said "Frenchie" made a nice 2 hole TRC and was on the forum. I searched and there are 3. Is it just Frenchie or do you know which one is the correct one. Just found a black washer today on ebay for $6 shipped and if I can get a nice 2 hole TRC for my Elitist that would be great. Like the "E" on it instead of "Elitist" That Ace leather guitar strap in the photo of JL looks kind of nice and comfortable. Also looking for a nice strap for my J-160E.

Oh ya for Plagueskill, IMHO there's a big diff. in the fit/finish of the Inspired JL by vs an Elitist Casino. Much more than just the label with country of origin to me.

Thanks!!

Aster
