What do you guys think of this potential craigslist trade

I recently posted for sale my 2003 cherry red B-stock Epi Casino, made in Korea, on craigslist. I got a response back from a guy who wants to do a straight swap, my Casino for his '89 Sheraton. He lives out of town, however, and we would basically have to ship our guitars to one another. I'm a little wary of this, but I might be willing to go through with it depending on the feedback I get from you guys. My two questions are:

1. What is the build quality of the late 80s Sheratons compared to current day quality. I hear a lot of raving about early 80s Rivieras, but do the later Sheratons hold up fairly well as well?

2. Anybody have any experience with long distance craigslist deals? I'm incredibly wary about doing this sort of thing; any postitive/negative experiences with this?

Below are some pictures. Thanks in advance. [smile]

My biggest concern would be assuring that he has sent you his, before you send yours. I would think that if he were legitimate, he would have the same concern. Unlike eBay, where there is at least some recourse for a transaction tha goes bad (leaving negative feedback, filing a dispute, neither of which are worth all that much) you are acting solely on someone's word. I wouldn't do it, no matter how good a deal it is. Unfortunate that we can't trust people anymore. Too many scammers.

I have to agree. Without the recourse of PayPal dispute resolution you are trusting the other party to ship you an item that you haven't seen up close and that could have defects even if the trade went smoothly. I'm reluctant to buy any archtop on eBay, but doing a swap is even riskier. Maybe instead of doing a straight trade, he could buy your guitar and you refund the amount when his shows up? Just a thought.

for sure. if he is shopping on ebay he is looking to buy, and if he is selling his there is no reason why he would not want to sell his to you if he buys yours. now, if he ain't willing to do that, that tells you right there something is wrong. another thing to add about poeple, nowadays poeple do wrong without even believing they are doing wrong. something to consider when trying to guess someones actions-you are at the mercy of his ethics, and as stated you have no recorse.

as far as the axe goes, i am not an epi expert but i know that those are good guitars. does he have it listed? what is he asking for it?

Your '03 Casino is probably made by Peerless and is well regarded, & the P90s were pretty darn good around that time. The humbuckers in early Korean Sheratons generally get very mixed reviews. At best this would probably be an even swap, or depending on condition, you might be trading down. Offer to drive & meet this person half-way, or forget it. You need to see this guitar first hand, and take along a little battery powered amp!

Thanks for the feedback guys. He lives much to far away to drive out there but he ended up reading this post and contacted me with the same concerns I had, so I guess we both agreed that it was best not to do the deal. Shame you can't trust anyone these days tho.
