John

I buy most of my guitars from Dawsons, they are a great seller.

The Special is down the cheap end of the range so has a few issues

# Its a Bolt neck (Not found on the more expensive models)

# The frets depending how unlucky you are could easily pop out (Cheaper construction materials)

Their a great beginners guitar tho

But if your a serious player and want a tremelo les paul I'd go for the PRO FX theirs a good choice of colours too...

Why is a bolt-neck and "issue"? Is it an "issue" on a $2000 American Fender? Personally, on a guitar, I like bolt-necks because I can shim them to get my desired action.

And please, stop telling people that the frets a prone to popping out on the cheaper Epiphones. This is just not true and has absolutely nothing to do with inferior materials. The fret wire and fingerboard material is the same on all Epiphones unless stated otherwise. And again, this is not something particular to lower end Epiphones and is a very rare occurance. You are more likely to get a high fret that needs a little crowning than an unseated fret...on any Epiphone.

The only issues with the GT are the same issues you may find with any new guitar and the perceived stigma of having a guitar that is less expensive than its higher-end counterparts from the cork sniffers.

The reasons that Fender necks are more durable isn't because the lack of headstock angle presents less pull. Reason #1 is because they are maple, which is stronger than mahogany. The angle on most Epis (and others) presents a 14 or 17-degree cut across the grain, which is weaker that the straight Fender necks. The large truss rod pocket makes that area even weaker.

With the short tenon on most Epiphones, I'm not really convinced. There is about the same amount of contact with a bolt-on and a set-neck. The only difference is glue or screw - unless you shim the crap out of it. I think the the wood types (lam vs. solid) and body mass between a special and a standard are going to have more of an effect on sustain than the neck joint.

Well...his question was weather or not anyone here owned one, or had experience with them, if i remember correctly, there was only one member that got one, and that was when they were first released, but i don't know if he/she is still around...I'd be interested to hear what he/she said/has to say about them again though because I like them a bit more every time I see them... Your right I joined in June/July 2008 if I recall. Was approaching 30, and stumbled on this site. Since the age of 16, seeing a certain Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Beatles with Epiphones made me want a decent one.

I'd heard NG goingon about Japanese Rivieras since 1994/95 - but never saw one - guess he bought a lot cheap, as in lotsof early vidsyou see a diff Epiphone, whether it be a casino with a bigsby, a riviera or sheraton, I wanted an archtp and was considering a Dot custom ( i think) one with block inlays, stop bar tosimulate a certain red wine riviera that a hero ofmine played. CB, Frenchie, AS90 & others pointed me in the right direction (ie how not too get overcharged for a Matsomuka made guitar.

Anyway I found a 1983 wine red one for £575 in england in goood condition, hardware slightly worn for a 25 year old guitar, since then I've a Epiphone 1965 inspired John Lennon Casino & a B C Rich Dagger (all arch tops) with diff tones/sounds.

It's a goodforum when we're discussing guitars, some people like to attack othes for the deals they've done/and i tend to keep out of these.

John
