Bob Marsh
Hi Guys and Gals, I've been working like a fiend on restoring a basket case CF-100 that has been on my boss's shelf for about 20 years - The object of the excersise is to brink one back from the brink and learn patient repair procedures. I hope you find these pics as interesting as I find doing the repair. Here's basically what I started with - Top collapsed, binding everywhere, chunk missing from the top, neckblock rattling around inside and buttblock loose. Sides around the neckblock were detached . After removing the old binding and freeing the top here it is - pretty much shot....I'm now selecting a nice set of spruce for the replacement. Here's the back of the top - Looks like the bridgeplate wasn't placed too accurately - pins near missed it! I think either the plate was cut too small or the braces were set at too wide an angle which shifted the plate upward. After carefully cleaning all mating surfaces I glued and clamped the endblock and neckblock making sure the loose sides and back were correctly aligned. After the glue dried overnight I unclamped her and cleaned up the years of dirt from the back and inspected the bracing which all seemed to be intact. I had to replaced a couple small pieces of kerfing where some of the old kerfing came away when I removed the top. On to the neck and headstock - You can see that somebody "smoothed" the back of the headstock just a little - Also "smoothed" the tips of the wings so that the headstock no longer looked like Gibson made it. After sticking the headstock to a block of "Hog" and carefully sanding it off I glued a piece of Mahogany onto the surface. I guess I've reached my limit of photos so I'll say "To Be Continued" in another thread - Hope thes are of interest! Bob
BigKahune
. Thanks for sharing Bob. Great photos. Looks like one of KSdaddy's "almost lost" fixer uppers. I'm looking forward to your updates on this thread.
retrorod
Interesting to see what the inside looks like! What a demolition job! You are brave to undertake this task! What was 'somebody' thinking when they sanded the headstock like that???
Gilliangirl
OMG, what a massive undertaking that is! It's overwhelming! Looking forward to the process.....

You think you could send it back to Gibson for replacement due to defect is workmanship? I see the new HS overlay. Are you intent upon resurrecting the smoothed over headstock points on the crown? Would it make any sense to just raze the crown off graft on a block of hog, then reshape the crown from new wood? Just a thought.
