musicmaker99
Scored a 1956 goldtop Epi reissue in pristine condition today. My only question is: I thought all 50's LP's had the chunky radius neck, not necesarily baseball bat radius but still larger around than a Standard neck. This '56's neck seems exactly the same as my Epi LP Standard and just a wee bit SMALLER than my Gibson 60's Tribute. Either my hands are getting bigger or something seems amiss
RaSTuS
Congrats on the new GT mm99, I don't think historical accuracy is one of Epi's strong points, regardless I hope you enjoy the new toy, HNGD.
midiman56
First things first ... congrats on the score. This is a classic axe that deserves to be a part of any collection ... play her well! On to the neck question: Mine IS quite a bit thicker in the neck than just about any of my other LP's. It's not a "Louisville Slugger", nor it os as heavy as a genuine '56 Gibson that I had the opportunity to strum a couple of chords on ... but it's no "60's taper" by any means. It's another example of Epiphone's consistant inconsistancy that comes up every onece in a while on the Forum. The last time was just a few days ago in regards to the P93 Riv and it's Royale couterpart. Epiphone makes a great guitar, but you almost want to play everyone before purchasing ... in other words, assume nothing! I wouldn't let it throw me too much though, Music. At that price and condition you scored BIG on this one. Unless you bought her specifically for the larger neck, I'd just enjoy the great sounds she makes! Have fun! Jim Well, I basically bought it as a necessary addition to my collection (gotta have a goldtop for petes sake!). I already have p-90's guits surrounding me (Gibby 60's Tribute, Epi Casino, Epi Lp Junior). However, I really would've of liked a chunkier neck on this one so as to not replicate what I've already got, sans the GT. It must play o.k. as two metal heads came over to where I was playing at GC (right after I'd gone into my scorching "I'm a 16 year old rocker" riff--LOL), sat down and just stared at me. I stopped playing and they said, "No, No, don't stop". God, I hate that! (as an aside, they were really surprised to notice that I don't use a pick. That brought up a whole different discussion and when they declared I couldn't do any pinch harmonics I let lose with a really shrill one, looked at them and said, "boys, that's what fingernails are for"). But I digress..... I did read on other forums, etc, that the neck on the 56 gt was rather thin, not as in Ibanez Wizard thin but definitely no where close to a D radius or louisville slugger. It is what it is and I'm happy to have found her anyway. Thanks for the info, guys.
BillyGibson
I recall my '56 GT's neck felt exactly the same as my Epi Std. LP. I don't think they claimed the necks on these to be 50's oriented or "D" shaped. I have heard others say their's felt a little chunkier, so perhaps there are differences to be found just like the ones from the 50's. Looks good. Love the gold top. I always wanted to put green tulip tuners on mine, but never got around to it. I'm living vicariously through others guitars, so if you could do that and take pictures, that would help me get over not having mine.
