Paulmorrison Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Hi all im paul from wales just joined to find out a little about an S.G that my father left after he died, He worked for a famous welsh rock band as a guitar tech and one day came back from a world tour with a smashed up S.G in a bag( that was ten years ago) It spent 5 yares in a coal shed then my grandad a long case clock restorer glued it back together, after that it spent another 5 yrs waiting for my father to pick it up. I got given it 4 month ago and have been sanding and filling it ready for undercoat when i started to sand down the seirial due to a poor stamping it first read 91945436 then the first number turned into a clear 8 not a 9 (81945436) but looking at the blue book kalamazoo closed its doors in 1985 so what do you guys think ? Hear are some pics, after looking back in this forum i think its 1995 but it clearly read 1985.( I have engraved it as an 8 before i found this forum ) HELP!
kevoT Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I think it'd be best if you use a guitar dater to find out about the date. http://guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx Thur ya' go! *Note that I just skimmed through what you wrote so this may not be what you're asking for. Meh, dunno!
BigKahune Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 . Looking at the back of the sanded headstock - that first number could never have been 9. It was stamped 8. Probably the finish filled it in a bit and without looking real close, it appeared to be a 9.
Paulmorrison Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 The picture shown hear is after i have gone over the number with a small drill to re carve it out, i can change it back to a 9 if needed. The pots have numbers 75-44070035 on vol and 65-44070035 on tone they have the gibson logo on top under the nut. Looking at the gibson seirial page kalamzoo started prouction at 000 to 500 then nashvile started at 500 to 999 but kalamzoo ended production in 84 this is the 436th body made so is it kalamzoo ???????
BigKahune Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 . It was made in Nashville. If 91945436 is the number then it was serialized on July 13th, 1995, number 436. If 81945436 is the number then it was serialized on July 13th, 1985, number 436. From the Gibson website ( http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/ ) - In 1977, Gibson introduced the serialization method that we primarily use to this day at Gibson USA, Gibson Acoustic, and the Gibson Custom facility in Memphis, TN. The serial number will be an 8 digit number impressed into the back of the headstock with "MADE IN USA" below. The pattern is as follows: YDDDYRRR YY is the production year DDD is the day of the year RRR is the factory ranking/plant designation number. Prior to 1984 when the Kalamazoo, MI factory was closed, the numbers 001-499 indicated Kalamazoo production. Ranking numbers 500-999 continued to indicate Nashville production through 1989.
Paulmorrison Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Thanks guys in still lost this is a 436 numberd headstock meaning its kalamazoo made, does anybody have a 85 gibson made in kalamazoo numbered from 001-499 ??????
Guest BentonC Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 This looks to be a 1995 SG Standard. Starting in 1990, the numbers from Nashville generally did still start at 500, but they also used 300, 400, 700, 800s and even 900s as well.

BigKahune Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 . Hey Paul, Beautiful work. The guitar looks fantastic. Great job. . .
Aster1 Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Looks really great from here. Did it ever get settled on an 85 or a 95? Doesn't really matter too much. Funny how 85 sounds like a near new git to me. Wasn't 85 just a couple of yrs ago? Aster
Paulmorrison Posted July 15, 2012 Author Posted July 15, 2012 Got the exact mumber from Gibson in the netherlands over the phone there wasnt an SG with the rest of the numbers starting with 8 and there was an ebony SG starting with 9 so it was only a year old when it was smashed up in 1996.
Dallastx Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 It should be a crime to smash up an expensive instrument. D
Saxosim Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Hi Paul That looks fantastic great job. Still can't understand why musicians used to feel the need to destroy their fantastic instruments :( Great job Cheers :)
