Guys

today I have been hyped over the fender Jaguars !!!! seeing the Kurt CObain reissue mad my GAS go wild.

I read lefty jaguars from the 60's are rare too .

If anyone can add something to this I would be greatful.

I own no electrics btw

Hi Juan

Congratulations on deciding to get a Jaguar! I am not going to lie, it is many respects is an awkward guitar that only a few people get on with, but if you click with it, you will love it!

I have a late 90's Japanese Antigua Jaguar and the main thing I love is the tonal variety from all the different buttons (LOL; not to mention the upper fret access because of the shape of the body) The Jaguar does however have a famous design flaw explained here (worth checking out this site - www.fenderjaguar.net). Also, as explained on the site, the pick ups are very low output although do sound quite awesome through my Peavey JSX Ultra channel [biggrin]

from the FAQ's

How can I fix the strings from popping off of my bridge?

This is more of a problem with MIJ jaguars than with AV Jaguar. Because the MIJ

Jaguars are not made with proper tolerances, the string slots on each saddle are not

shaped correctly, nor are they deep enough to house the whole diameter of the string.

This causes a lot of strings to "pop off" of the bridge during play. One option to solve this

problem is to use thicker gauge strings. Using 9's or 10's is a big mistake, for their gauge

and tension is not suited for the Jaguar. 11's or up are generally considered good. Aside

from using a buzz stop, the best option

Jaguars look and sound great, with some high profile users...probably Johnny Marr being my favourite....

I like the Jazzmaster with it's P90 esque P/U's

And the Mustang is a total trip...huge sound from a petite format

Also the 'other half' of Kurt's well conceived Jagstang.....

That is a NICE jag Mr. Matt.

I am surprised to hear of the Japanese versions being built "out of spec", or however they put it. I find the Japanese Fenders to be so close to the actual Vintage Fenders in a lot of areas, I almost don't believe the statement.

Regardless, I don't have either, the Jag or the Jazzmaster, but I will say that the body shape and the balance of both really get to me, and I have played more than a few in my searches.

I think the string popping out has always been an issue, at least it was with the old ones.

thanks Matt I really value your input :) .

and PMan the reason for looking into this model is actually Johnny Marr :) I've been a Smiths fan for alot of years and while I don't play electric guitar I would like to have one or two to stray away from my acoustics from time to time . I really don't know what Fender offers in lefty or doesn't offer though . thanks to you both :D.

does the Fender Custom Shop do Jags ? in lefty maybe ?

Fender does custom shop in whatever you want, generally....

Look into the Johnny Marr model, it seriously has been very well thought out by him and he's worked out how to keep the looks, the feel (and more importantly the sounds) without keeping the design flaws of the original. Have a sniff round Fender and Youtube sites to see his videos of it... I must admit I'd like one myself.

Like the PARLORMAN says, they do anything.

Unless it has changed, the Fender CS actually does do anything you want, and they have it set up where you can be talking with the guy doing it if it is really out there.

You should give them a call. I don't know the number and I haven't spoken to them in a long time, but I think they still answer the phone. I mean, they will TALK to you.

In today's world that is so rare and also nice to be able to actually speak to someone on the other end!

If you want a really really awesome Jaguar for a small budget, than get a Classic Player Jaguar like i did.....

Believe me or not, but after i got it, i instantly sold my CP Jazzmaster and my Vintage Hot Rod Telecaster!

The Jaguar is the best and most versatile guitar i´ve ever played!

Here it is...

No offense, but how did a post about a Fender Jaguar get on the Gibson acoustic guitar forum?

I think it's just beacuse the OP, JCV, is a regular contributer here, and a lot of folks here also have electrics. It is interesting to hear what electrics people who are primarily acoustic players end up with. Matt, for example, is a trained classical guitarist who also happens to have some pretty "metal-oriented" electrics. Go figure. Seems like such a nice guy, otherwise. [biggrin]

It happens from time to time, and doesn't seem to taint the information stream very much, or for very long. At least not yet.....

After all, we talk a lot about J-160E's here, which is really just an electric disguised as an acoustic.

the Johnny Marr Jaguar is at the top of my list...however, no lefties are currently being produced : (

I recommend all left-handed players contact Fender and let them know they are interested in a run of LH Johnny Marr Jaguars

here is the response I received from Fender in regard to the JM Jaguar and J. Mascis Squier Jazzmaster:

There are no plans at the moment but if the demand rises to we may eventually introduce those models in a LH config. Have a great day!

The Jaguar was my first (good) electric guitar. Carl Wilson played one so I had to have one! Here I am in 1965 with my new Jaguar and the all new Fender Twin Reverb. Sure wish I had that amp now.

What a lovely combination! A fellow Beach Boys fan here too [thumbup]

My wife and I won an internet competition to meet Brian Wilson a few years back - and although very brief (a quick signing and a few words;) it was a dream come true.

The Kurt Cobain Jaguar has lots of differences from a typical stock Jaguar-- I think the pickups (DiMarzio humbuckers), and upgraded bridge and tuners being the main ones. Given that the Cobain model is $1295, and there's been a white left handed Jaguar (custom shop) hanging on the wall at the Sam Ash here in NYC that goes for either $3700 or $2700 (I think the higher number-- whichever, I just remember being deeply saddened when I saw the price-- I didn't even bother trying it out...), maybe a good option would be to get the Cobain model, and mod it so it's closer to the Marr model.
