I would like to change out the pickups to the 498/490's. I know they come stock in the es 137 classic. However, I love the look of the custom. Before I do this ,are the pickups on the custom wired differently because of the vaitone? Curious how they are wired and if i can just get the 498/490's and slap them in like any other guitar. I wish my R9 had a 57 classic/classic + in it but it's too rare to change it and it's not like I don't like the sound with the BBs. I just prefer those 57s! I think they'll grow on ya . . . Artisan Posted March 6, 2012 Share Posted March 6, 2012 The '57 Classics are a bit brighter and more well rounded than the 490/498 combo. The 490/498 pickups have a more classic rock mid range sound. I have a ES-137 Custom and I really like the '59 Classics. You can play with the varitone and get the sound you want. I'm sure you will like it...
