You ES339 Owners out there

I am very happy with mine - fit, finish, electronics, tone are all good. Some folks reported some quality problems with the early ones (got mine during the original relaese in December, but there were no issues with mine). Many of the problems were with the Ultra, I have the Pro.

Good luck with yours, make sure you post pics when you get it. Here's mine:

I'm really pleased overall. I was a little disappointed with the PUs in mine, but only because they didn't sound like the Ultra version I test drove at GC. I'm replacing them with GFS Pro Series PUs. Fit and finish are really good, plays real nice.

I hope you get lucky. Check out the Customer service thread at the top of the forum list. The wiring fault involves some Pros as well as Ultras.

My Ultra 339 has gone to Gibsons' European Service Centre for reworking, expected back in about 2 weeks.

My Pelham Blue Ultra 339 is currently in Nashville having the grounding hum fixed. It is under warranty and Gibson/Epiphone is paying for shipping both ways. It's a great guitar and I like it a lot, but my advice is to check out everything very carefully on recepit and if there's ANYTHING wrong with it, send it back immediately.

Also, keep both the factory box and outer shipping box and packing in case you need to make a warranty claim. Lifetime on materials and workmanship, but only 1 year on electronics, including pickups I believe. Keep in mind that most of the mail-order houses do not have repair facilities of any kind, so it will have to go to Nashville, TN for repairs.

Lastly, make sure you receive or print out a receipt from the seller (not the packing slip) because Gibson won't do warranty repairs without it.

Thank you all for the info. I ordered a pro so maybe I'll get lucky and there will be no problems. I'll check everything out really good to make sure. It sounds like a well made guitar but the quality is just a bit inconsistant. I'll let you all know.

I'm happy to report that my Ultra 399 came back today, only 9 days after I sent it out. Arrived in perfect condition, very professionally packaged too.

The repair tag says:

- p/u's are out of phase

- neck pickup incorrectly polarized

- straighten neck

- reassemble/restring and adjust

- replace p/u's

Elsewhere on the tag it says they just replaced the neck pickup, I assume because you can't actually change the polarity of one pickup in an out-of-phase pair of humbuckers.

In any case, all's well that ends well, glad to have her back and ready for action.

Thanks Gibson for making this a fast and relatively painless warranty repair.

PS, I just plugged her in and she's dead quiet, no hum, and no drop in output in the middle switch position.

Maybe it's just the new strings they put on, but I'd swear it's also louder and more articulate as well.

(Probably just my imagination.)

Great news Brian. Does the 339 PRO have any of these problems? I'm thinking of picking one up.

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. The wiring is much more staight-forward on the Pros - no Nanomag to deal with.

I can tell you that the Probuckers on the Genesis prototype are damn fine pickups, and the coil tapping makes for a really versatile instrument, almost like having three guitars in one - semi, LP, and strat.

Oh the Pain. just found out from my local shop that the 339 Pro is back ordered till June. They only have one in red and that's not my favorite. May have to move up to a casino.

Well...I'm not gonna sell the Dot! Just ordered HB size P90's for it with cream pu rings. Already pulled the volume pots out and labeled them. Should totally change the sound of it.

Sweetwater Music is still saying that they will be getting the 339 the week of March 18. I hope that they know what they are talking about. This is my first time to deal with them. They did have the courtesy to call me to let me know of the situation. Keep your fingers crossed for me as I will you.

Well God is truly good. I finaly got a 339! THe mail order places were back ordered bad so I took a chance and called my local dealers. I found one at a place called Bailey Brothers. I played her all day yesterday. She's natural color, and another guy had them holding it for him but he didn't show up Friday or Saturday so I got it! You all were right, it was well worth the wait. So for eveything works like it's supposed to and after I put a set of GHS Boomers 10's on it and set it up the way I like, it sounds and plays wonderful. Thanks for all your input.

That's a very nice looking guitar. I'm glad you finally got it. I really like that natural finish on yours, kinda wish I had gotten that myself.

I wasn't all that happy with my stock pick ups so I ordered GFS Pro series Alnico IIs but they didn't coil split so I got some SD P-Rails. Nice brights with these in Hummbucker setting. Feedback issues with single coil at high gain settings though. The single coil is not quite a P-9O nor is the rail a strat but they're good enough as these pick ups give 3 way versatility.

Good luck getting a case, mine has been on back order since late January.

I didn't really like the stock knobs that came on my 339 so I put these black metal ones that I already had on there. I'm not used to having numbers anyway so I don't miss them on the knobs. I think it looks great. How about you all? Do you like them? I took the metal E off the pick guard as mine wasn't sticking well anyway. I am still loving this guitar! I don't think I'm even change the pup's, which I almost always do. But I really like the response and sound of these.
