Bob Dylan @ Mohegan Sun

I went with my son to see Dylan at an Indian Casino here in Connecticut. I was so excited since he is one of my heros and I've never seen him before.

I was very dissapointed, not by his performance but by the sound in the arena he was playing. The guitars were like icepicks in my ears. The drums had no definition and the bass was just a whoosh of boom.

He changed up the arrangements to most of his older tunes and it was interesting if hard to really hear it. The seats were good but perhaps in a bad location for hearing it well.

I have seen artists play at Foxwoods Casino and it was awesome but I will never go to see a show at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Has anyone else seen Dylan on his current tour and what did you think?

Ain't likely to see a Dylan tour in this lifetime...

But...

You just really reenforced my constant harping on the importance of thinking about a sound "system" as opposed to a batch of this and that sorta amplification.

Who cares, at some point in that, who the big name is, or your band, if folks hear such horrid sound? Okay, drunk or otherwise ... charged up ... enough, fine. But I know that I actually want to hear the music.

The Cool Deadwood Nights concert the end of August with B.J. Thomas and a cupla good warmup acts sounded good literally five blocks away on a super-crowded street. That's good sound engineering. BTW, they also had a big lcd screen - big as the side of a barn anyway - so folks farther away could see quite well.

Why do you think it's unlikely you will see Dylan? His band and performance was great. Rearranged some older tunes in a very interesting way. It's mostly the venue that was dissapointing. I would like to see the show again but in a place designed for music and not a hockey match.

I saw him a year ago with Mark Knopfler and I thought his band was great but seemed to be trying to cover up Bobs dodgey voice.

Sounded like someone strangling a cat that smoked too much :P

I really like his scratched up voice. He still hits all the right notes with his voice and the raspynes is cool to me. I can see why some might not like it though.

I don't think anyone could do better with the sound in that awfull venue.

Yeah I dont hate (thats why I went to see him).. I have full respect for him.. Hes written some of my fave tunes ever. I just generally prefer other peoples versions of them lol... His voice just isnt for me...

When I went though I did get something I thought was cool, one of his Harp solos :)

Bobs one clip is at the end about 4:17

Ain't likely 'cuz I'm not a kid, my work schedule is roughly 7 days a week, and I'm in the boonies at the literal center of the nation in "flyover country."

Short of the occasional concert in Deadwood - the Rapid City staff does the ones in Sturgis - basically I don't get far outa town.

FWIW, Bob's latest (and 35th) album is due anyday. "Tempest". Supposedly very dark, but revealing. Hmmm... I'm kind of an off/on Dylan fan. I like some stuff, others...not so much

Bob's latest, Tempest, is being released tomorrow 9/11.

Here is a video of the first song.

Now why in the world did that song make me think immediately of Leon Redbone?

<grin>

Leon Redbone does a lot of Tin Pan Alley and this song especially the begining has that feel to it. I'm not thinking it's a rip off just a type of style.

Are you thinking something different than that?

Naaah....

I just think that here's yet another proof of my contention that the older a musician gets, it seems the more he or she has a tendency to get into more classic "pop" styles. Although the Leon we know seems never to have left that. Apparently also Dylan has known Redbone on a personal basis. Leon managed to carve an interesting performance niche that is on occasions co-occupied by others. The old Mama Cass piece "Dream a little dream of me" actually is from the '20s as I recall.

Our musical roots go deep. There's nothing wrong with delving into them regardless the style we might be considered to be known for. Heck, I do it all the time. OTOH, I'm almost as old as Dylan and I figure Knopfler is still a kid - darned talented kid, but... <grin>

My roommate was at the same show, I showed him your post and he agreed. He said the sound was a mix of muddiness and very shrill high end, though I've heard this from a few friends who have been to Mohegan Sun shows.
