NGD!

Hi,

I'm Henrique from Lisbon, 32 yrs old.

1st post, and starting with a NGD. Actually, it was a week ago, but I hadn't had time to take pictures before.

I ordered an Epiphone ES-339 Pro from Thomann, and it arrived in 4 days and in great shape.

I love playing it, as it feels really solid, well put together, and I also like the pickups (though I had to adjust the height on the bridge pickup, which was too trebly and with lower volume than the neck pickup).

After a change of strings (D'Addarios 10-46 with wound G), it plays great and sounds really good, to my ears at least.

I'm happy to report I didn't have any problems whatsoever with tuning, it stays in tune and does not "ping" at all when tuning, which is something I was a little worried about.

It's a totally different guitar from what I had (Fender Telecaster American Standard and Squier Super-Sonic), so I'm really happy with my purchase.

As for looks and finish, you can judge for yourselves, I am very happy as well...

Nice Guitar!!! I've got one just like it... I just fit mine with a bone nut. I absolutely use the single coil mode on both pickups. It all depends on what the song needs and what the other guys in the band are doing/playing. BTW - work on your string winding technique and cut those long ends off the strings [biggrin] !

Thanks guys!

dporto, you are right about the string winding, it was kind of dark in the room when I was changing strings, so it wasn't my tidiest string change ever. Yet, the guitar holds tune perfectly, so I'm a happy camper :)

As for the single coils, I'm so used to how my Tele sounds that I can't get around to using them... maybe it's just my ears that have become so used to that sound that they can't get used to something different.

The coling splitting is cool, but I too find that I don't use them, and when want that single coil sound, I reach for my tele style guitar too.

Thanks everyone!

I was wondering how many of the ES 339 players in the forum actually use the "single coil" mode on either pickup?

I end up using them only as humbuckers - I have a Tele if I want single coil sound anyway...

Nice Guitar there.

I love my VSB model. I too recently put a bone nut on and restrung with .11's. (nut was cut correctly for them)

Yeah I use my coil-tap alot. I've found they sound real good at a higher volume (performance level) than at bedroom level.

Enjoy your new guitar.

Great guitar, great looker!!

Is the coil split feature only on the Epi or is it on the Gibson as well? I didn't see it listed in the Gibson info. I would think the single coil setting could sound quite a bit different to a Tele. More like a Casino maybe? Those that have let me know if I'm wrong.

Gibson 339's don't have the coil split. Of course electronics can always be modified - and why stop at coil splits when you can have Jimmy Page wiring with an even bigger range of tones? Series-out-of-phase can be an interesting sound although the effect will vary between different pickups, and even with their relative volume.

Splitting a humbucker can leave you with a very low-output coil which might sound a bit weak. With a typical PAF of 7.5k or so, you're left with a single coil around 4k. Hotter pickups will fare better.

You can add more turns to beef that up by making a pickup with a tap on one of the coils so that the split gives you a coil and a half, or a coil and a quarter, or whatever.

It's never going to sound quite like a tele but I think a carefully designed split can add some useful new sounds.

Hi everyone,

Yes, they do sound very different to the Tele, that's what I was saying - for single coils, I like my Tele so much and I'm so used to it, that I don't think it's letting me enjoy my 339 pickups in single coil mode. I'll let some time pass and keep trying to see if my ears get more used to them :)
