After looking at the photos and blurb of the new 50s style LG2, I just had to drag out the Blues King, it is sounding and playing fabulously.....13 or 14 years old now and really 'kicking in'.

If they ever, ever get an LG2 at my local, it would be interesting to play the BK next to it.....advantage to BK - 14 years of play, great setup years ago by my luthier. LG2 better not be a klunker! (assuming they ever get one in).

I have mentioned before that every Saturday morning I grab a guitar and play strictly fingerpicking blues in C style with a capo on the 3rd fret, but being tricky I tune the guitar down 2 frets worth. I pressed record to get a short idea of what I do and while a lot of the original songs seem to be about cocaine, I only had a cup of tea! And my new Capo Noir Shubb in black is terrific for bent notes!

Or better yet, use no pickup at all. I have only one acoustic with a pickup--a carbon fiber Composite Acoustics Cargo.

It you don't play out in a situation where you cannot direct-mic your guitar, why would you need a pickup? How many buyers of "stage-ready" acoustics actually use them that way?

Well, you wouldn't probably buy this guitar with a pickup if you didn't intend to plug it into something... but Gibson and Taylor put pickups in most of their guitars so they also must expect people to plug them in.

Then there are a couple of stages of content/discontent. The blurb with a J50 Original series:

This Original Collection J-50 features nickel Grover Strap Cream button tuners and an LR Baggs VTC pickup for effortless plug and play and natural-sounding amplification anywhere you perform.

Ha ha ha ha ha ....

So they do plug it in and then think...PFFFFT, and they are off to the forum to 'what is the best pickup for X?' And there are 450 million different replies from 'don't do it', 'get a mic', get a.....xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and Ha ha ha ah: "Don't go on after the Maton player!" 😝😝😜

    Etc>>>>>

It is an artform in itself, really! Once a good sound is found, you can record it direct instead of a mic, very handy in a noisy house and surrounds like mine. And I post them. But you sure wouldn't like the Baggs VTC plugged direct to an iMac, I can tell you - it stinks. (Of course, someone will pop their head up and say they love the sound.....

Back to the new LG2 in the review posted.....

    In the summing up:

"My enthusiasm for the LG series makes the 50s LG-2 easy to love, and Gibson did a great job re-creating the feel and sound of the original. My one complaint is that Gibson chose to include an L.R. Baggs VTC undersaddle pickup as a standard feature. I’d rather the electronics be optional, as I don’t think they really capture the quality of sound the guitar is capable of and I’d appreciate the opportunity to choose my own pickup instead."

I don't like the Element much either, but it does give you some 'electricity' straight out of your new box. Your nice new Gibson LG2 can then sound like someone ripping the speaker up....... If you remove the undersaddle to put a different pickup in, you will probably need a new saddle or the old one will be too low. (Element pickup sits under the saddle).

Help for the sound is at hand though! Buy a Tonedexter, learn how to do it, make the soundfile and you then get the sound of your guitar being mic'd. Another is the Fishman Aura Spectrum, but the soundfile for a new LG2 probably doesn't exist. Still way better than the straight Element.

Next option could be buying and installing a Baggs Anthem - it has the Element part under the saddle as well as a mic type pickup, so you may not need a new saddle?

Or rip it all out and get a K&K and preamp, and a new saddle.... I love the K&K Trinity but I use in ears/headphones to prevent the mic feeding back.

    BluesKing777,

If, as was stated earlier a whole new pick guard costs $300.00, perhaps they'd just sell you the beak you need for $25.00 or $30.00.

    RBSinTo

I probably won't bother but I will get a nice new bone saddle to replace the plakky one someone has had a bit of a hack at, to lower just the 1st string for some reason, and went too low..... It still plays ok, don't know how. The pickup (Anthem) is working great so some would say let sleeping dogs lie, or this let sleeping dogs fart while having a wolf running dream?

P.S. If I could buy this new one from Sweetwater, can't! - but by the time it arrived here with delivery, importation travel costs, exchange rate, it would be (Australian Dollars) $AU7,265.31!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Ain't ever happening - while I love my pawn shop Dove more daily, it is not the little coupe/convertible fingerpicker I normally drive...... Yep, I mainly got the Dove because you guys are always going Blah, Blah, Dove, Dove, Blah, Blah, Blah and it was there unloved, for sale, so I thought to try it out.....

I have wondered the same thing, Bluesking. I’ve been very impressed with the Waterloo lineup and hoped they would do some kind of LG. The few I’ve owned were spectacular but too similar in tone to my keeper Martin 017 custom.

Speaking of the LG2 I stopped in a new local shop I have not been in before and they had one on the wall. I didn’t have much time but it was enough to play and listen and know that all my questions have been answered. Probably the most comfortable neck I’ve played on a new guitar.  And the tone was what I’d hoped for - a great compliment to my Martin. They wouldn’t negotiate from the tag price so I walked. But at least now I know the answers to my questions and will begin the budgeting  and shopping.

The other incredible guitar with 1 3/4" nut, 2 3/8" bridge space, big V neck is the Waterloo WL-14 version of the Kalamazoo KG-14/L-00. Sensational ragpickers!

Strange that Bill Collings nailed the Kalamazoo KG-14 sounds but in a modern playability setup, but doesn't seem to have attempted a Banner LG2. Maybe it was on his long list of to do guitars? They don't seem to be doing many new guitar models since he died, just rehashing.

Here is my 2005 Dove that I bought last year...

The poor old dove has no beak! The pickguard is pretty worn, but did I care?

Nope, I thought it was part of the parcel, including the person writing the name of his fave song and band on the lower corner.

It is not lifting! Though the earlier model guard, I have no idea if anyone has had a problem with it previously... maybe they need to go back to these, or ...the BOLTS!!!

BK, whether it's the L body shape or the LG shape, the small-body Gibsons are perfect for fingerpicking. As you say, the new ones just need some age.

I've been playing my three 'hog slope J's almost exclusively for the last year--#1 1950 J-45 tuned down a half step, #2 1950 J-45 in standard tuning, 1943 SJ re-issue in open D. It helps to have three so that you can leave them in different tunings depending on what you want to play.

Every now and then, however, I hear a muffled voice coming from a redline case in the corner. It's the L-OO Legend, saying "play me, play me, play me."

And I'm always amazed at what a crisp, dry tone it has.  I got out a plastic thumbpick and nickel fingerpicks last night, something I haven't done in years. Even with long-dead strings, the Legend sings its little old heart out.

Probably the  best thing to do if you don’t play it is to send to me!😎

Now if a new LG2 of any ilk arrives here, I will be there to try it, buy it? (As has been explained by others in depth, we only get what the dealer loco brings in at 3x the price.)

That said, if we look at USA Sweetwater we can see that for $130 more than the LG2 Original, we can have a Martin CEO7.....if they can stock it long enough since the Yesterday movie with the hero playing one. The CEO7 has very similar specs to the L-00 Legend.....1 3/4” nut, 2 3/8” bridge space, V neck.....adi top over mahogany.....

Mine is from the first flush, 5 or 6 years ago, and has a very nice Honduran mahogany back and sides...they have used a few types of mahogany since. As mentioned previously, I had a K&K Trinity pickup system installed and even though I thought the setup was ok, told the luthier, Mr Magic, to do a nice setup while he had it. He keeps saying it is a great guitar, a wonderful guitar.... I just played it for an hour or so and guess what? It is! Does it sound like a Gibson slope shoulder L-00? Nope!Does it sound like a Martin 00-18? Nope! But it sounds and plays GREAT for fingerstyle!

Brand spanking new - it probably needs to be left out near the fence for a while....trouble with most shop guitar videos is that the guitars are......new! Few years on it if it is playable....different beast.

Apart from the odd laconic strum on a couch, the good news with an LG size guitar is that they weigh 2 feathers/ 3 feathers tops. Chuck it in a Hiscox to fit and you add 2 more feathers and a great outfit to lug up the street and 3 floors up to that gig run by the sadist...oops, getting steamed up thinking of a gig I did, past is past, eh?

Moot point anyway, the shops here don't seem to have any intention of ordering the LG2 or L-00s, just dreads. We have our top selling Maton 808s, a deep body copy of a mix between a Martin 00-18 and a LG2/3.

Here is Al Petteway playing a bit of rag on the ideal sound:

Apart from the reasons mentioned above, doesn't the shop you buy the guitar from have a hand in it, so to speak?

There are 2 kinds of guitar shops near me - one where you 'get what you get',  no matter what brand, and the other shop has every single guitar in the shop presented perfectly and ready to play today, again, no matter what brand.....they have a 'show workbench' at the front counters and most of the staff do a bit of tweaking.......they have a brand new 'Original' Bird natural finish for $AU6,699 today and for that money you can buy 2 or even 3 of the local made dreads, so that Bird had better play well! And it will, at the (2nd) shop. Checked, adjusted, new strings, polished! A lot of work for every guitar! Catch is, they are more expensive....

I got an email from the Lottery people saying I have won $11.20. Whoopee.

I have been playing Lotto online for a few years now.... I suppose the cynical would say they wait for everybody's numbers to get computerized and then search for some numbers nobody has.....😫

Depending on what kind of things you play, the Authentics are superb.......the concept is to make a new version as close to possible to the original guitar. Worthless if you only play C or D chords, but incredible if you play the whole neck. I still have my OM18V, which for all intents and purposes is the same size, shape as my OM18 Authentic. The V is a great guitar but the A is that same thing on steroids - dig in to the A and notes LEAP out at you!

Gibson’s version of the Martin Authentic idea is currently the Historic Series. I can’t comment as I have not seen one here yet, but what I said earlier about owning the whole row of Martin Authentics could apply to the Historics - win the Lotto and but the whole range to try next to each other!

Sheesh! That's just a 42, not a 45. No abalone on the back. Not enough bling for me.

However, there are original 1930s 000-45s out there, if you can find them. And they aren't cluttered up with EC's signature on the fretboard.

Might as well keep my 000-28 EC, and spend the money on something else.

I mainly posted the link because of the wife in the video, just going about her normal day, emptying stuff in the bin and fluffing round the kitchen and the ‘Yes dear, just go buy it’.......Acting, pure acting, eh?

More like ‘buy that geetar and don’t come back?

Oh and a bling free Lotto buy could be the whole Martin range of Authentics! That would be fun comparisons, at home.

Being hardcore anti-bling, that would normally detract from my opinion, also, I wouldn't count on a presenter's sound setup on YT to necessarily be an accurate translator of tone.

I hear good things about the CEO-7, and your stamp of approval carries weight in my house.

I can't believe I'm even talking about buying another freekin' guitar.

Well, you in the wrong forum if you want to sell guitars, that is for sure!

Luthier says my CEO7 is really great, it is, but when I first got it the Adi top was so hard and the action a touch high, that I nearly took it back. A lot of new Martins still sound brand new when they are 20 years old! I thought the CEO7 was never going to break in, and then one recently, picked it up and......Hello! So I recommend one 5 years old and played hard, could be a beast! Weird thing does my head in...L.00 shape, V neck, like playing a 30s Gibson except it sounds like a Martin..err with a Gibson touch. (Slope shoulder). Very intriguing.

Better sounding guitar than the SCruz kauri, to my ear. This discussion pushes me in the direction of selling off a few to buy a single better guitar. As I tell family and friends, I bought my last guitar 3 guitars ago.

    Slippery slope!

Does the bling on the Martin make it sound better, or is there better materials and construction under that bling?

Nought to do with that, but have you tried a Martin CEO7, JZ?  Mine is 5 years or more old but It came with the Martin slightly high but playable setup.....which is fine. But recently I had it setup, plus a Trinity pickup (K&K plus mic). Luthier kept saying it is a great guitar....hey, that is a great guitar. That’s because he made it play like a dream! Strange guitar, L-00 made by Martin, nice set of mahogany plus an Adi top, mod V neck like the Clapton. It was in the movie recently, Yesterday!

Not sure.  Ive been bad for spending money on items I didnt need that were over priced.      And it did not take a lottery.  Now if that was the case. I think I would share the loot to people that were struggling   .  Then it would be on those to squander or spend wizely.

You just sit down to play your new guitar - all the mowers, howers, blowvacs and steam cleaners are having lunch - and there is banging on your front door...

”Uncle Slim, Uncle Slim, I need some more money!”

”What happened to the 5 mil I gave you?”

    ”I lost it..”

Then later, you sit down with your handmade masterpiece by Ren , appreciate the nice finishes and are about to pluck it for a while before dinner and the phone rings.......”Slim, old mate, can you lend us a few bucks?”

So you move out and don’t tell anyone you bought the place on the sandhill by the ocean. You pick up your 50, 000 year old bit of wood guitar, take it out to the deck as it looks a nice day for strumming a driftwood guitar at the ocean.  You pluck a note to start tuning it and you hear yelling........”Help, help, help!” And you have to try and rescue someone drowning in the ocean out front of your house with their boat sinking....nobody lives anywhere around for miles! And you manage to drag this old bloke to shore and then notice that it is J45Nick from the guitar forum...... “Aha, found you” he splutters, “I was hoping you would give me your old Gibson J45, and maybe spare me a couple of bucks?”

    😐
