If you go the music store route  be prepared to take a bath unless they really want the guitar and feel they can unload it quickly.  You will do better in a trade situation as they have more wiggle room.  You might put the guitar on consignment where you can establish a price which as low as you are willing to go.

The music store does save a lot of the agony... I have done this a number of times to avoid the 'free for all' that can occur with general listings. Last time, I consigned 2 guitars and 1 sold almost immediately while the other wouldn't sell for months and months. I got sick of waiting and spoke to the shop owner and traded it for a cheaper guitar with a Hiscox! The accountant would die but I got a guitar that I play all the time for no outlay and just a little drama.

If you haven't consigned a guitar before, be aware that the prices you see on their listing includes their percentage, taxes etc! (so you think: "Beauty, I'm gonna get $5K!!!" - but you only get $3.8K.....😐)...but your phone hasn't rung at 3AM every night with a drummer who wants to learn guitar...etc...

Hello! I recently bought a Gibson J50, yesterday as a matter of fact. And I've never owned an American made acoustic so I am not sure if this is a defect or a flaw in the craftsmanship? I did include a pic... Am I being petty?

Also, the gloss finish above the bridge feels to be thinner or non existent compared to the rest of the top...  a patch the size of my hand. Is that a future problem? This is the first Gibson I've ever bought, I've only had PRS and Fender in the past. Thanks in advance!

To me, no expert, they look like saw marks that have not been sanded enough....

Start playing that J50 as hard as as you can and wear the marks down!

Here is short recording I just did of the Cargill Custom 00 with the Trinity pickup system....the guy next door was cutting bricks or something in half so plug the guitar in I did!

So I fingerpicked a short blues with a mixture of lead style blues and old style chords, using my right thumb and index finger mainly.....a couple of slides peaked the meters!

Wildwood Guitars site show measurements for their acoustics...have a look at the Gibsons.

They give a measurement for the nut plus the neck at 1st fret and 9th, including the actual fret, strings off I believe....

In the Gibson section, I would put the (new guitars) ones with .82 at 1st fret in the slim category and ones with .91 in the chunky!

(we can measure away all we like but if no one else does, just says it is ‘chunky, don’t know the measure’....meaningless.

If you really want to know the measurement of your nut and bridge and neck profile, and a myriad other items, buy yourself a Vernier.....these days you can get a real cheapo digital model for not much.

I have an ancient history NON digital somewhere but I need a magnifying glass to read the numbers - the newer ones have a large digital readout! The StewMac one has a few extra guitar measuring tools!

So then next time you say you have a very chunky Gibson neck or a very skinny one, you could give a measurement!😎

I picked up a fairly expensive one recently at a hardware store and measuring guitar nuts and necks and bridge spacing is a bit of a revelation - what they give you on the guitar's spec sheet is...err...something they were 'aiming for'...

I have a lot of time for K&K gear. The PWM system in my Hummingbird 12 is absolutely superb, to use a cliché, it just sounds like the guitar but louder.

That Cargill is a looker isn't it? Absolutely stunning. Would love to know the science behind the treble-biased soundhole plavement, that kind of thing fascinates me.

Do you mean the placement of the mic, Jinder?

Very scientific! Same with the preamp gain and EQ settings.......highly technical......once the guitar was delivered back and I had played it plugged a bit, sounded so good, I rang the luthier and asked how much time he had spent arriving at that point.

”None!” was his reply.he said he plugged into his PA to try it and it all sounded so good to him that he didn’t touch a thing.  He said he thought he could only make it worse!

Of course I must tell you that running it to an amp or PA at band level is just going to induce feedback with the mic setting I use - flat out! Like my Matons! So I run to some black boxes/DI for EQ and reverb/delay and use in ears!

Anyway, getting a guitar custom built for you is just a very, very special thing and the sound is coming along acoustically AND electrically just...beautifully!

Would I get another made? Don’t know if I could do it again though I recommend it for anyone that hasn’t! It is just a roller coaster of emotions like patience and expectations.

Ooops, there is  a thread already - sorry Pierre (sent me a message about my 2002 J50)...

As I have related here before, I bought my 2005 Dove at a pawn shop and not long after saw the 2002 J50 at the same shop. The Dove was ready to play and I have not touched a thing since buying it - it does have writing on the top and probably why I got it so cheap! The Dove  has a way chunkier neck than my previous Gibson acoustics 2010 J45, 2007 Gibson L-00) and my vernier says the nut is almost 1 3/4"....so not the usual modern Gibson spec....

The 2002 J50 with really chunky neck, was pretty well unplayable as it was but a couple of the higher notes just cried out when I played it in the shop, and a couple of people turned around to see what it was! So I bought it before they could and tried to play for a few months until I could get it to my luthier. Came back with a setup, new bone nut, new bone saddle and an Anthem pickup I asked for... Yep, I spent a lot! it will never be perfect, I was told - too much earlier bad treatment, but I like it, for what it is....

Yes, it is a sensational guitar -  pickup or not!

I forgot to mention the logistics of getting the pickup installed - because of the virus lockdown here, I had to ship the guitar to the luthier! And back! Don't think I slept the whole time it was gone.

My incredible Cargill Custom 00 deep body now has a K&K Trinity Onboard pickup system!

I have been on a little mission to get a guitar of my choice to have as good a pickup as my Matons with their Maton AP5-Pro dual source pickup systems.

I had a K&K Mini in the Cargill Custom and just had the 'Trinity Upgrade Kit' installed....an internal mic, preamp, battery, twin volume controls is added.

    https://kksound.com/products/onboardtrinity.php

    So far, I love it!

The K&K is ok, pretty sound but just adding a few percent of the mic makes it much more real. No good for playing in a loud band with drums! Perfect for BK777 alone. It has this complicated gain and EQ section in the guitar but I just run it to my Fishman Platinum Pro EQ/Di.

Edit:  So...the million dollar question....is the Trinity system as good as the Maton AP5-Pro system?

Firstly, to get the Maton system you have to buy a Maton! The K&K Trinity can go in your guitar of choice.......

It does not sound as 'high definition' as the Maton system but still sounds great.....and it is all supposedly 'removable' - all the parts are stuck on with glues, tapes, velcro and no surgery of the guitar was required - it already had the endpin drilled for the K&K a couple of years ago. The Maton system needs a large hole cut in the top of the guitar where the whole bridge/pickup assembly is installed and a another hole in the upper bout for the control panel. The Maton system has it all under your fingertips to adjust, and also has sweepable mid control.

(You can also get a K&K Trinity Pro System with the K&K and the mic ONLY inside the guitar and you run a stereo cable to a separate preamp/blender unit - you don't have so much stuff in your guitar but you have to lug the preamp around. I wanted my guitar to be 'stand alone'.....).

Oh ye of little faith.   Think about it.  A Taylor wrapped in Old School Chicago.   The mind wobbles.  These are the guys who did my Harmony conversion.  But it was years back so I got a Martin inspired X brace.

I think Andy Powers of Taylor was hoping to make a guitar with 'older' tone when he invented the Grand Pacific model. Here he is playing and discussing the model at Fretboard Journal:

Here is my Gibson Blues King L-00 and my friend's (they previously called the L-00 standard 'Blues King')....they both look a bit different but...similar...

Mine is on the right and my friend's is on the left. Mine had bubinga back and sides - his has mahogany...

    Wow!

    Good find.

But I think Bob is off in Africa growing eco  ebony plantations, leaving Andy to run the ship.

I am thinking that the bracing may have been changed to 'V' bracing after they read Andy's stuff about guitar top vibrating along an axis.......and X bracing can get in the way of that at some points and cause dud notes.......

Or maybe the original braces just plain old fell off!

    Edit:

Yuk Yuk! Here is my Taylor slope shoulder rosewood/torrefied sitka  if it had my Gibson J50 pickguard! I could get the back taken off and do the opposite of the chaps with the Harmony above and take the V brace OUT and put ladder bracing IN!😆

Nice, but you missed my point, Dave!

If I was going to take a 'lucky dip' on a new LG2 Banner reissue at list of $4,299, I may as well go for the 'lucky dip' of a vintage model LG2... I have taken vintage guitars to my luthier to straighten out lots of times and they come back great usually. Sending back a guitar to Gibson on warranty because they made it wobbly is a whole other kettle of fish.....years of angst maybe....especially here in Australia.

It is a moot point anyway because CITES makes hard to useless to buy/import a Banner here and there are no new models in the country as yet - cannot import new acoustics - can only buy through a dealer here now thanks to international politics.

    Quality control out to lunch?

Quality control people have real vintage Gibson acoustics they want to sell? So they are steering people towards buying old! 😁

For example, the brand new reissue 1942 Banner LG2 lists for $4299:

    https://www.gibson.com/Guitar/ACCMH3461/1942-Banner-LG-2/Vintage-Sunburst

And here are some mainly reasonable priced 'real' various 1940s Gibson LG2s on Reverb.com at the moment:

Oh well, it is just a guitar...don’t keep it if is not right.

Lucky they don’t make airbags or such important items. Do they? 😅

I have been keeping my eye out for the new models to get delivered here to try ...something. Online sales only shop here just got 9 boxes from Gibson  acoustic. Wahoo, we think, the new LG2s could be in a box they showed on Facebook....

Nope...all older models.....4 J45 Standards, yep, four. 1 SJ200 standard. 2 G45s. The others were pre-orders for customers. But you know, 4 J45 Standards! Where are the Banner reissues and Original series and ....and....? I want a brand new LG2 with the fat neck!

Back in my box and I will go play my boring old ones!

An old line when things go wrong is "Who left Barry in charge?'

    Bloody Barry!

The other day on AGF, there was a thread where someone wanted either an LG3 or a J50........in the end he came back and had bought a new LG2 Original...but get this - it had the wrong neck.

    Update:

Contrary to popular opinion I've decided to go with an LG! and an lg-2 at that, rather than the previously considered lg-3. While the dreadnought tone has the un****with-able tone, I've found that the smaller LG body was simply more fun to play, and that was the deciding factor in this one.

I got quite lucky on a new Gibson model that had a factory error! The guitar was intended to be a 1959 LG-2 reissue, hence the large pickguard and the wide sunburst. It seems however that a banner headstock and neck found its way onto the body. Definitely a happy accident that I was excited to find. s/o to the folks at Chicago Music Exchange for walking me through weeks worth of deliberating.

No joke - in the virus world guitar repairs are being done very different here....short story for ya....

A couple of months back while we were in Stage 3 restrictions here, my luthier/guitar tech was operating semi-normally, if that is possible...and I ordered the "K&K Trinity Upgrade Kit" for my custom made 00 deep body he built me 4 or 5 years back.

It didn't get delivered to him until this Monday and now we are in severe Stage 4 restrictions with full 8pm curfew, and I am not allowed to go to his workshop. I asked about a courier to pick up my guitar and then return it when the pickup is installed. (if the luthier orders the courier, he gets the commercial couriers instead of the mum and pop old smoky Toyota!). But the commercial couriers are flat chat because of the online buying with possible 10 day wait.

The luthier is working from his home workshop (allowed) but if we break the virus rules by driving there, get caught by the cops and it is a $1650 fine! Both ways! OK, a big wait coming up then...

But no, they are selling more guitars online at the moment and they all need the luthier to stop them hurting, so the luthier has organised a little guitar pickup service! The driver turned up in a modern jeep to get my guitar, in his virus mask and gloves, with 10 or 11 guitars in cases in the back and my custom in a Hiscox went fairly unceremoniously on top of the pile! I suppose if it gets broken, the luthier can make me another!

I haven't heard that song in years, maybe over a decade. Your bringing back the 80's . A decade of music which many did not get out alive. I think of all the terrible bands that got popular due to  MTV that should not be cause they had the LOOK. Boys looked like girls and girls looked like boys, wait that's today too.   It was a time when mostly the synth was the flavor of the day.

I think you might be accusing me of being deep when I am sadly quite shallow and had the tune in a Guitar TAB......played around with the melody and the chords to try and get the guitar to sing it....

    No guesses of the middle?

OK, here is the middle bit on its own - my fingerpicked version of "Under The Milky Way" by Steve Kilby.

Played on my Lowden 022, not the Dove! (I should have tightened the capo!) So it is probably another "Expensive A Minor Chord" - what a friend says when people buy expensive guitars and can't really play them!).
