  1. I come from an Italian-American family, and I hear a variety of mispronunciations of Italian food loke MOT-sir-ELLA cheese. It doesn't bother me at all. My neighbors from Indiana used to call the first meal of the day Brefkist. And we caught these little prawns and they called them srimp. When Mrs. Notes and I took a trip to the UK, we drove around in a rented car for a month and then spend the last 4 days in London. We spend the evenings in the squares where there were buskers and artists before going out to explore the night life. On the third day the guy at the hotel desk asked us if we went to Lester Square yet? We said we hadn't and he got out a map to show us where it was. He pointed to something called Leicester square, and we said, "Oh yes! We went there, heard the buskers, saw a guy carrying an alto sax case, started a conversation, and he got us into a private club as a friend of the band." How the English ever got Lester out of Leicester is beyond me, but now I know how to pronounce it. For me, there is no reason to get irritated when someone mispronounces something, or if they get pretentious and want to use the non-American publication. There are enough things to get irritated about in this life without looking for more. I'm pretty much a live and let live guy. Insights and incites by Notes ♫
  2. We do that a lot, don't we? I, for one, don't want to pronounce Champagne or Montreal the way the French people do. No one here would understand me. After visiting quite a few countries on this planet, others do the same thing with our words so it's fair play. Notes ♫

  5. Mrs. Notes and I play no louder than 85dba unless they ask us to play louder. It is our responsibility not to damage the hearing of our guests. We are the pros, we should know. We are a duo http://www.s-cats.com and I make my own backing tracks. I can do this because I play sax, wind synth, flute, bass, guitar, drums, keyboard synth, and voice. My first instrument was drums. In bigger bands, I used to get back on the kit to let the drummer do something else, it's good show biz to have people switching instruments. Now I pre-record them on the +600 backing tracks we have. There is a difference between acoustic drums and electronic drums. It takes a while to adapt to them as playing style is different, and your expectations of what it will sound like when doing certain things is different. The advantage is that you can play aggressively at a low volume. On an acoustic kit, the drums don't sound right when playing a hard rock/pop/country song at a low volume. With the electrics, you can hit them hard, and turn the volume down. Kudos to you for wanting to play at a sane volume level. Notes ♫

  8. My mother-in-law got relief from PEMFT. Pulsed ElectroMagnet Field Therapy. The PEMFT machine needs to emit a square wave, north polarity and the highest strength you can find. The pulsed field loosens the calcium build up, and immediately after you are supposed to drink a lot of water to flush it out while it was still dislodged. After her therapy insurance ran out, we bought her a home unit. Thankfully, the diet worked for me. Notes ♫
  9. I'm curious. Has anyone tried the Arthritis/Bursitis diet I posted earlier in this thread? If so, is it working for you? Notes ♫

  13. I wish I wasn't slowly wearing down the finish on my guitar, flute, and saxophone. But when you gig for a living, it happens. And we do 3 days a week, outdoors, under a canopy, but on the public beach. I like their looks better when they were brand new. Now, I guess they have 'character'. Again, I don't understand intentionally distressing a guitar, but there are a lot of things in the world that others do that I don't understand. As long as it doesn't harm me, it's OK. Notes ♫

  19. Lawns are poisonous. The "Weed and Feed" chemicals contains carcinogens that leech into the water supply and stick to your skin. The amount of groundwater used to keep them green could have filled Lake Mead. According to the EPA, the fertilizer industry emits 100 times more methane than all the cow farts and burps on the planet. Lawns are ecological disasters. The lawns look good, but keeping them green is an ecological disaster. There are no turf lawns that grow naturally in the USA. Living in AC uses a lot of energy, which emits greenhouse gases, which makes the earth warmer—which makes the AC work even harder—which uses more energy—which emits more greenhouse gases—which makes the earth warmer—which makes the AC work even harder,—which uses more energy—which emits more greenhouse gases—which makes the earth warmer—which makes the AC work even harder yet—which uses more energy—which emits more greenhouse gases—which makes the earth even warmer—which makes the AC work even harder—which uses more energy, which emits more greenhouse gases—ad infinitum. (or until the planet becomes uninhabitable). Living in the AC, people's bodies do not get acclimated to the heat, so when they go outside, it feels much hotter than it is, and they sweat profusely. I grew up in Florida, before homes had AC. People had white roofs, which reflect the heat out of the atmosphere, and planted shade trees around the house. Mother Nature kept the houses cool. Over 99% of the humans that have ever lived on Earth have done so without AC. Now people paint their roofs dark, (which makes their AC work harder), mow down all the trees, and live in their sealed coffins. Like I did all my life, I have a white roof, and shade trees around the perimeter of my house, but not over the roof. The sun hits the white roof, it's reflected up, the cooler air from under the trees move in to replace it, and no matter how hot it is outside, it rarely gets over 79 in my house. I planted ferns under the trees, which feed the trees, and hold the soil down. I have a half acre, and I replaced the lawn with native vegetation that naturally grows in my particular area. Ii needs no fertilizer, no herbicides, no pesticides, and no watering. It gets along just fine with Mother Nature provides. I can treat it with benign neglect. I have birds nests and squirrel dreys in the trees, and because I am near a nature preserve, I get wildlife in my yard from time to time. Instead of fighting Mother Nature, I'm using her to make me comfortable, save me money, and save the earth. Won't you join me? --------- And yes, my instruments are slowly getting beat up. If shops still relacquered saxophones, I'd get a relacquer job every few years. Sadly, they don't do that anymore. The auto body shops can relacquer outdoors, but the EPA says a shop that works on brass instruments requires a million dollar recycling room for the lacquer. The car folks have a better lobby. My guitar is getting worn in the picking area. I'd rather it didn't but I can't help it. So I guess my instruments are getting relic'd all by themselves. My guess (and it is a guess) is that many of the people who buy relic'd instruments, want to enhance their street cred. They think they can impress others by having a guitar that looks like they have been playing for years. IMO the best way to impress others, if you need to do that, is to practice and learn how to play better. There -- I'm back on topic. Insights and incites by Notes ♫

  21. All my instruments are tools. I use them to make my living. Currently, we are playing 3 days a week, outdoors, a few hundred feet from the ocean, and the salt air is relicing everything. I'd rather they stayed nice looking, but I'm happier that they are providing me with my income. I don't understand why you would buy a pre-beat-up instrument. But then, I don't understand why females cover their beautiful skin with tattoos, or why anyone would eat at a fast food joint, or why anyone still smokes cigarettes, or why anyone would buy new jeans with holes in them, or why anyone would grow a lawn around their house, or why anyone would come to Florida and then live their lives in Air Conditioning, or why anyone would be a vegan by choice, and so on. But as long as their likes don't directly hurt me, I'm OK with it. Notes ♫
