I suggest, to those who've never seen it, that they obtain a copy of the film FOOD INC.  to learn what unfettered "Big Agra" is doing to our food supply.  And THEN see how they feel about government "deregulation" of that industry.

We don’t but “pop” in this household. Does anyone else call it pop? I heard it was somewhat of a regional thing… either way that s*** is bad. Only “good” things to drink are (pure) water and milk if you can handle the lactose. Coffee isn’t bad I suppose if you don’t add the sugar and cream and don’t consider caffeine a bad thing. But again I go back to water and milk. Everything else has something bad in it IMHO. To add, I don’t like milk personally but that’s just because I don’t prefer it.

Actually, you're living IN a region that ordinarily calls it "pop".  Much of the midwest/"rustbelt"  area does.  And really, Mr. Evans(the "merciful")  hit it.  MODERATION.

Much of the stuff that some people here have been claiming is really bad for ya actually isn't.  Not if consumed in moderation.  For instance...

I would usually only on occasion have a can or bottle of "pop" with either lunch or dinner.  But never drink it all day long.  Not at those prices.  I don't mind drinking milk, but since the TIA have taken to fat free skim milk, which I only use for certain cereals as on it's own, doesn't(to me) taste as good as whole milk or even 2%.

Pastry is a rare treat, and not big gobs of them either.  The largest portion od anything I eat lately are salads.  Usually with diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, shredded carrots and finely shredded swiss cheese topped with any "lite" vinaigrette  or other "lite" dressings.  My use of coumadin  keeps me from being able to use endive and/or Romaine lettuce.  And spinach leaves too.

  2. Sho' 'nuff.  And those steroids don't "cook off" like alcohol does.  So consumers are also reaping the "benefits" from those too.    And I sometimes wish I learned how to separate and de-bone  a chicken like my Grandmother could.  Then I could go to those poultry shops in Dearborn, MI run by Middle Eastern Muslims where I'd know the chickens would be raised by the laws of Halal and be clear of any unnatural additives like antibiotics and steroids.

I remember as a kid going with my Grandmother to a nearby poultry shop in Southwest Detroit( and that shop has been long gone now) and we'd go inside and there'd be nine chickens in cages behind the counter.  My Grandmother, raised for years on a farm, would ask the guy to see one chicken or another, hold them, squeezing them and going through a few before picking out one she liked.  The guy would take the chicken out through a door to the back of the shop and come back about 10 minutes later with a small brown paper package.  I guessed it was the chicken .   When we got back to my Grandmother's house, she'd fill one side of her double sink with water, unwrap the chicken from the paper, and hold it over a burner on the stove to singe the little hair like stubs left on the bird after the plucking.  Then she'd soak it in the sink for a while(an hour or two)  then take her boning knife and separate the pieces with surgical skill and precision.  Other times I'd see her cut all the meat from the bones with the same precision, leaving only enough scant meat on the bones for boiling the carcass for soup.

If only I learned to cook HALF as good as her, I'd have the best restaurant in town!  [cool]  With the best Pierogi you'll ever eat!  [wink]

  3. Sure.  And thanks!

I've been been touting the detriments of high fructose corn syrup for about 20 or so years now.  I avoid any food products that use it.  Like Hershey's chocolate syrup.  And since these days(see a post in some Epiphone forum thread) I eat ice cream extremely rarely, I quit topping those rare occasions with it, using Nesquick syrup instead because of their not using high fructose corn syrup.  I mean, it made sense to me.....

I recall back when I was younger and as mean spirited as other adolescents, we often referred to other kids who were overweight as "corn fed".  Which goes back to those times when farmers wanted to fatten livestock and fowl for sale at certain markets.  The best way they found for fattening up those animals for market was to feed them corn.  And lots of it.  My Mother and Grandmother, who both grew up some on a farm told me that years ago.  It's actually more "fattening" than sugar, which only contains 16 calories in a teaspoon.  I couldn't find a calorie per teaspoon comparison for HFCS.  But recall many Asian countries use corn for sweetening, even going as far as using corn as an ice cream topping.   Indeed, since my TIA and cutback on sodium I'll eat the vary rare corn on the cob, which as a kid I enjoyed with both butter and salt, and which I eventually cut down to just having it buttered(with usually a cholesterol free margarine) to now just having it without anything on it at all.  And having it plain tastes just fine.

Yep, first knew of Tim Horton as the great Toronto Maple Leafs player, then his doughnut places in Canada.  'Round here you can't go very far without spotting a Tim Horton's.  I'm of a mind that believes Tim Horton's, Dunkin' Donuts, and Krispy Kreme  each gets their coffee from the same company, with the only difference being the packages they get it in.  [wink]  And since McDonald's McCafe coffee tastes about the same, they do too.  And in that light, since McDonald's will often offer any size soft drinks and coffee for $1,  it's a fairly good bargain over the others.

  4. We all no doubt listen to different radio stations.  I was mostly tuned into the local PBS station here until it changed to all news, and also the local classical station till it signed off for good.  The only "rock" stations I'd tune into for short spells were the "classic rock" stations, on which I've never heard the above tune on, and the from across the river Canadian "New rock" station which I believe never played it either.

Sounds like the kind of thing that would have been big on Mtv.  Which I completely ignore.

So, which of these bands had violinists in their line-ups at the same time as Kansas, and who remained in those line-ups until they died, or the band did?  THAT'S a mark of Steinhardt's status.  I mean we ALL knew who he was, even if not by name.  Just mention KANSAS to most and their immediate visual image is of Robby.  And his bearded face with that infectious  smile!  [wink]

  5. I started off years ago using Gibson brand cream guitar polish and an old dish towel.  I've lost track of the Gibson polish, couldn't find it again in any music shops, so I switched to Martin spray polish( which I got for far less than the cost of most car waxes) and apply it to both the body and neck.  Of the GUITAR!  [wink]   It really did nothing for MY body and neck! [biggrin]

I clean the fret board with Olde English wood cleaner, drying it with another old dish towel, and then treat it with Olde English lemon oil.  Just a small drop 'tween each fret wire, rubbed in with an unused corner of the old dish towel.   I go through this each string change.  Works for me.

  6. In a couple of those, one was well known here(Crimson)  And another never reached the audience that Kansas manged to(Fairport Convention) . And Beautiful Day only chugs along with a slight cult following and their main(and only fiddle player) keeps busy with solo projects, none of which really go anywhere.   And in most cases the guy who played violin was multi-instrumental, and didn't fiddle in every tune.  (like Loggins  and Messina,  and Cimson).

    But thanks for the info.

  7. There's four nurses in my family and I sorta know what you're talking about FORTY.    They take their work seriously and have no time to waste on people who don't take THEIR work seriously.  So  Mutha's band better be great!

Dexy's Midnight Runners and Cockney Rebel both had violin players in their line up.

Sorry.  Never heard of either.  And looking into it, found neither had anything released or that charted here in the U.S.  And my radio can't pick up any UK stations.  [wink]  So it's no wonder I can't think of another rock band that had a regular violinist among it's personnel.  [cool]

  9. I'm going back and forth with a guy in another forum about Costco shopping(which in these parts now is no different from BJ's of Sam's Club)  and how my wife and I (former Sam's Club members) would joke about going there to lunch on all the samples they'd offer all the time.  [wink]   Back in "the day" we used to belong to one of the WAREHOUSE CLUB locations, all of which are gone now.   And since I'm retired and now a widower I have no need for getting many groceries, and other health and physical issues keep me from going many places and often enough to need getting gas for my car more often than once every three weeks or more.  And for the last few years there's been no real difference between the prices at Aldi and the Meijer store I frequent(which ids closer to home) except for some items.  So I usually go to either, depending on what I need.   And the Farmer's market my grand nephew manages has an excellent deli and top shelf produce..

    FORTY:

Coke has always had caffeine, so I don't get what's so "new" about what you brought up.  And as you know, IHOP is a restaurant chain, and they no doubt sell their coffee at any restaurant location.  I've never seen it in the stores I frequent, but I'm willing to bet it's on par with DUNKIN'  and that McCAFE McDonald's is peddling now.   Much as I like coffee, I taste no difference twixt Dunkin', Tim Horton's, Krispy Kreme  and McCAFE at all.   The only major coffee that's different is Starbuck's, which I don't consider fit to drink anyway.  I suppose if you're the kind of person who goes in for those Baskin-Robbins type coffee stands, it's OK, but just straight it pretty much sucks.  It actually NEEDS to offer 31 flavors in order to be drinkable.

  10. NOTES;

Since when was B.J's a "local" grocery store?  'Round here, they just made a foothold, and they're just another warehouse club type barn like Sam's Club.  NOT the kind of place you run into real quick for something.  Unless you happen to be in real quick need of a 5 gallon  container of mayonnaise.  [wink]

Out of curiosity, I checked.  Was hoping it was just rebranded.  Turns out they were owned by General Foods.  General Foods merged with Kraft and Kraft already had Maxwell House which was more popular so Brim was sidelined for 15 years.  River West stepped in and snatched it up in 2007. I don't know what happened after that, it was supposed to make a comeback so maybe it's just not available in our areas yet.

And for you, what area would that be?  I'm upfront about mine.  [cool]

Dixie Dregs is the only other one I can think of. If you haven't heard them you may want to check them out.  Steve Morse's first band. Southern, progressive rock, with a violin. I love it!

I never really think of them as a "rock" band.  Rock bands don't ordinarily show up at the Montreux jazz festival.  [wink]

Robby had a significant role in Kansas sounding the way it did.  His violin is what made Kansas stand out from a lot of other bands. Still does.

Yeah, since Jerry Goodman left THE FLOCK I can't think of another rock band that had a regular violinist among it's personnel.  Oh, some might have one sit in for a tune or so( Like the Doobies and "Black Water") .  And Papa John Creach, who fiddled for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna really wasn't a regular leaving both bands after a couple or so years.   Whereas Robby was not only a founder, but also the foundation of Kansas.

  13. There's that.  And especially in my band's case, since we were already doing  Dale Hawkins' "Suzy Q"  as part of our "oldies" mix.  Just needed to add an extra note here and there for CCR's version.  [wink]

    In an interview with Mary Gross on NPR's "Fresh Air" 'bout a dozen years ago, First thing she asked John Fogerty to say the words, "turn"  and "burn".  [biggrin]  John chuckled, knowing what she was up to and answered;

"You know, when I SAY "turn" and "burn"  they sound like that.  But for some reason, when I SING them they come out "toin"  and "boin".  [laugh]

  14. Good interview, but I came in mostly out of curiosity.  Wondering what was meant by "The Captain"------  ?

Like, did it mean  Lifeson collaborated with   (Eep!)  DARYL DRAGON?  :-& (God forbid)  Or-----  did he meet THIS guy?  [wink]

Or....  maybe even THIS guy?  [omg]

    [wink]
