Bjames
Hi Everyone, Looking at the 2019 SG Standard 1961 (with Vibrola) and I cant seem to figure out the differences from a reissue 1965 that cost more than twice that of the 1961 version. Can anyone wxplain what the differences are between the new 1961 and the vintage reissues that cost more?
Sgt. Pepper
Yeah one costs more. But seriously are the specs any different (binding, pups, number of peices of the body ect)? Is one made in the custom shop? Not sure. Edited January 14, 2020 by Sgt. Pepper
pauloqs
Maybe somebody else can confirm this, but I believe the neck profile is different. I believe the 61 has a slimmer neck. However, I’m not entirely sure so take it with a grain of salt.

Other than looks, this is a completely different SG. Main difference for price is that it’s a Custom shop build. That in itself has always commands the higher price tag. As for differences in the instrument, there are many. All the woods are hand picked and of higher quality. Different shaped neck and vintage frets. Also the pups are unique to this build and wiring is different. There’s a few other things I’m sure I missed. And oh, the crown on the headstock is in the correct location. badbluesplayer
Like Arctic said, the Custom Reissues are from the Custom Shop and cost like 5 grand. The 61 Standard is a version of the Standard line with appointments similar to 1961 models. It's priced like regular Gibsons. I have a Standard '61 and I love it. It needed lots of nut work - not a big deal.
SteveFord
The details are hazy but I recall they had to dig through a bunch of them to find a Standard that wasn't screwed up for badbluesplayer. But they put new bulbs in all the light fixtures at the plant and from what I heard Gibson is back. Well lets ask BBP, what he thinks of looking 9 SG's before the 10th one is except-able.
