Mickzep
Hey guys I’ve just purchased a 1983 Les Paul standard and was wondering if you could help my identify whether it’s a ‘59 reissue or not?
sparquelito
If I'm not mistaken, in 1983, the reissues weren't called a '59 reissue. I think they used the model name Les Paul Reissue. Some were made in the Kalamazoo plant, with large tortoise shell side dot markers. The ones made in Nashville would have the small side dot markers. Either way, that truss rod cover looks to be an aftermarket add-on. 😐
'Scales
Yeah, as Sparky said, I too think the reissue (R9) was quite a bit later than ‘83. I’m confident someone here will have the facts for you before long - enjoy the new guitar!
duane v
I think the guys name that worked at Gibson on these was Bruce Boles and thus the Leo's LP Models.
duane v
There should be a stamped serial number in the volume control cavity as well.

Mickzep
Hi guys, I don’t know if this helps… btw what’s the difference between an ink stamped headstock and a regular stamped headstock? id really like to know the exact model of this Les Paul…cheers! duane v
Open the volume control cavity, that's where the serial number should be
duane v
And of course you have the Tim Shaw pickups.... Best ever by Gibson IMO.

In the early 80's some Les Paul Standards and Customs had 50's style ink stamped serial numbers and sometimes accompanied with an oval pearl plate with more etched information. slimt
Put it on a weigh scale , what does it weigh? Gibson was trying to pull them selves out of extinction from the 70s .
Mickzep
Truss rod cover is definitely factory stock…
sparquelito
Can you post a photo of the back of the headstock?

Very rare indeed. http://lespaul.music.coocan.jp/collect/collect16.html
Mickzep
Thanks so much…do you have a ballpark market value for this particular model? cheers
sparquelito
Interesting. I would have lost a cash bet on that truss rod cover. I find that with a little patience (and a line-by-line cut and paste into Google Japanese to English Translator) you can read some pretty interesting stuff about not only that guitar, but the history of Gibson, and all the various reissue models over the years. 🙂
'Scales
??? Sparky I got a recipe for Karaage chicken. Equally good to know, but less relevant.

Mickzep
The original case is the chainsaw case it came with…though I have seen some pre historics with lifton style cases…not too sure if they’re aftermarket though!

Some do come with the historic cases and others the chainsaw.

saturn
I don't have anything useful to add. I just enjoyed browsing the thread and learning some stuff. Congratz on a cool guitar. Like slimt said, I'd be interested in knowing the weight.
