Pick-Up Upgrade...

Hey, just wondered if anybody could help me here? I have a cheap Epiphone Les Paul Junior model I bought new last year. Anyway, its only a bolt-on neck but I really do like playing it. My problem is I wanna put a P-90 on it as I don't like the look of the Humbucker thats on there. Just wondered if anybody had any advice such as which would be the best pick-up to use etc. I don't wanna hack away at the body routing or drilling so want something that will fit easily into the humbuckers place. I was thinking of maybe the P-94? Help and advice please guys, it'd be much appreciated!

Also, I used to be a member on here but its all been updated and I couldn't log on. It let me register with the same name though, does that mean my old account has been deleted?

Cheers guys...

See the Pure 90 click this!

I agree with the others and LOVE my Mean 90 Click this!

Mean 90 makes the most sense at the right price IMHO

Something else worth considering in the SD line is the new SHPR-1 P-Rails!

It was just demo'd at NAMM so they probably won't hit the pipeline until March/April.

Anywho... it's a P-90 and a single SD single coil rail together, that fits a standard humbucker slot. Tonewise (with the proper wiring) you can get true P-90, or true single coil rail or a humbucker! Cosmetics might not be what you're after however, talk about your tonal variety!!!

Check out this video for a sample

Cheers guys, loads of help there. I'll check out everything you've mentioned. As for some of the questions you asked, well I am after the soapbar style/dog's ear P-90 but I'm guessin that means I'm gonna have to screw into the body. In that case, other than screwing will I have to make any changes for the P-90 to fit in? As for sound I'm after the dirty yet pure P-90 sound, the original vintage punky sound y'know? Well I dunno if I've described that well enough but any further help would be great!...

Thanks alot for everything so far everyone!...

  • 5 years later...

Seymour Duncan phat cat is a humbucker-sized P90 which will drop straight in. Kent Armstrong also do one which is pretty good. However, if it's the look of it you're after, they look much the same as a humbucker.

Can agree with you there, we put a Phat cat into an Epi LPJ plus new pots and cap and its absolutely fantastic, my son has a 2010 Gibson LPJ and he only plays the Epiphone model? Would recommend new pots (500k and 300k)and a new capacitor, the stock electronics in higher Epi models (G400, LP Standards etc) are okay but the electronics in the cheaper models is pretty crap.

If you want that p-90 look, too, I've been very happy with the Heywood Habanero I put on my Junior. A little extra wood removal at the ends of the route (I just used a sharp chisel, no router) and it fit right in and covered any signs that there used to be an HB there. Hot enough to scream (16.9k!), but roll it back a little and you get those warm P-90 tones. Here's the before and after (Oh ya, I turned it into a DC, too).

Before: $59, w/ HSC, falling apart. Big gouge on the back of the upper bout, a real POS.
