evol04gt
so after i build a mahogany thinline telecaster (hollow sides with the f hole)..im really wanting to either make or have made a p-90 special, jr or a fender jazzmaster/jaguar... anyways... i want a good idea of p-90 sounds... are they like more balsy single coils? i have listen to hundreds of sound clips, but its never the same as hearing it in your own studio through your own rig ya know??? are they noisy? what will i expect? im not looking to get anyones "sound" out of this guitar... i just wanna see how im gonna like it ya know? or if its a horrible idea... everyone throws around the term VINTAGE tone way to much for it to mean a damn thing anymore IMHO.... i get more tone out of the soul of my guitar and the way it speaks to me than anything.. (you know what i mean).... so that being said--- how would you guys say your p-90s sound? i rarely use my bridge pick up in my les paul on its own.... to nasally.... i play with crunch dist, medium, classic overdriven distortion, bluesy clean, rock clean, and phased/flanged/chorused and always heavy reverb.. i play hard rock to blues to ska so my musical influences are from a to z. FrankS1281734010
well we can all type here 'till our fingers fall off, but the only way you're gonna know what they sound like is if you listen to them being played. some of my favorite players that play p-90's are Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day (he recorded most of their last two albums with vintage juniors), both guys from Social distortion, Mick Jones played a junior on all the early Clash stuff, Johnny Thunders...just to name a few. yeah, i listen to a lot of punk.... evol04gt
i think i mean the tonal differences.... compared to buckers and singles.... in general.. i know all pick ups can be different..... and hum and what not.... i am a huge social d fan..... i know i have to play them to really get a feel if i like them or not... but i dont have that option yet... TWANG
what I like is the smoothness without muddiness of the low end of the neck p90. and I like the treble, the bite, the chime you can get out of a p90 while still having plenty of power. to me both positions yeild better balance individually and together than I could get from humbucks, or smaller single coils. the power to tone ratio lacks the need to push your amp to make up for low output, or to make radical changes on your amps tone controls. For me, it's the best of both worlds, with a little more besides. The mids, and the highs are easily enough for any country clean, general rhythm no matter what the style. and no muddi lower mids and lows. Hey, it's just what I like! Prospero
Speaking of the P90 sound, how do Gibson P94s compare?
FrankS1281734010
Speaking of the P90 sound' date=' how do Gibson P94s compare?[/quote'] i have a p-94 in my g-400, and i'd say it isn't exactly a p-90, but it's about 95% there. i dunno, hard to explain. but it's a great pickup. antwhi2001
Best way I can describe it is like an overwound Tele bridge pup, but with different amp / fx they can give quite a range of very recognisable classic sounds....on high gain, with 2 P90s you get early Santana, Martin Barre of Jethro Tull....with less gain, you can get that bright but punchy mid-60s Pete Townshend chord sound. If you own several electrics, you should have at least one with P90s....IMHO. Thay are a bit noisy though, if I stand close to my amp at gigging volume I get a lot of hum compared to other guitars. Might bother you in a studio (doesn't bother me!).
evol04gt
my biggest problem with people telling me "listen to album xxx from 1950-1973) and thats an xxxx pixk up or xxxx amp/ guitar combo" is the fact that recording materials REALLY sucked back in those days to get a true indication of tone and sound of the ORIGINAL guitar and amp in the room at the time.. my biggest example is the HORRIDNESS of old basses.. (the baseline in Another on Bites the Dust is EXACLTY what im reffering too.

evol04gt
pop in a ventures cd....listen to it loud..... then imagine how good it would sound with more modern recording practices? some nuances may be lost too..... the guitar sound in the kinks "you realy got me" really sounds like garbage in my opinion...and wasnt that done with a ric? RotcanX
anyways... i want a good idea of p-90 sounds... are they like more balsy single coils? i have listen to hundreds of sound clips' date=' but its never the same as hearing it in your own studio through your own rig ya know??? are they noisy? what will i expect?[/quote'] That's basically it. A P-90 is a single coil with a wide, short coil as opposed to the usual narrow and high coil. The sound is definitely fatter than a standard Fender single coil but still has more "edge", but less balls, than a humbucker. And yeah, they can be noisy under certain situations; you learn to stay away from your amp. I have an SG with P-90s and it's like a razor. I also bought an Epiphone LP Special with P-90s and it's surprisingly close to the SG in sound... I'm planning to drop a pair of Seymour Duncan P-90s into her. clem1281733998
Looks like a good spot for a shameless plug. I've got an SG Classic just like the one Rotcan pictured for sale right now. I did a search and couldn't find whether or not classified type stuff was allowed so I didn't create a thread. Priced right...pics available As for on topic...I agree with the description of the P90 being like a fat version of a tele bridge pickup. I keep gravitating to the neck pickup alone on my other single coil guitars but my Classic and Casino sound great on bridge alone or both.... in addition to the wonderful sound of the neck pickup alone. pissedoffepiphoneowner
P-90 - noisey as all get out. not really a thin sound... i wouldn't say ballsy... its kinda ballsless actually...thick.... er um, well rounded... i don't know, i kinda picture the pickup as nothing special, bran flakes, easy going... natural... evol04gt
that flat top epi with p90s is sick.... i wish gibby made the sg with soaps in a lefty.... its way cheaper than a standard and has binding... if only it had trapezoids..
RotcanX
if only it had trapezoids.. Well, the SG Classic is essentially a '68 SG Special reissue, except for the addition of the tune-o-matic bridge... so trapezoids would be out of place on it. Specials never had trapezoid markers. RotcanX
Is there anyway fender jazzmaster pickups would work in my dot Sure... anything's possible; it'd just be a bit of work making them fit and providing some sort of mounting method. I would expect that the pickup holes would have to be enlarged. Not sure if it'd be worth the effort... probably simpler to just get some Phat Cats or P-94s if you ask me.
