evhwolfgang
I have a 1996 Epiphone G-310 (SG) Junior that I am wanting to change the tuners to 5 Grover and a Hipshot Xtender with Grover button. What's involved? Specs on peghole size? Any info appreciated. Thanks.
jcwillow777
I don't have a 310, I have a G-400. I swapped out the tuners on it with Grover Vintage Green Keystones. They had a 10mm hole and the Grovers dropped right in. The only thing I had to do was drill 12 small holes in the back of the headstock for the tuners. But that really wasn't a big deal. I have put the Grover Vintage Greens in 3 of my Epis and had no problems with any of them fitting- Dot, G-400, and '57 Junior RI. The new tuners almost covered the original holes up, but just a tad can be seen, and I'm the only one that is going to see them, except for those looking closely at this picture. evhwolfgang
Did yours have the pressed in fittings?
jcwillow777
No, they screwed in from the top. Here are the specs from stewmac. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/1/Grover_Deluxe_Keystones/Specs.html#details
Bakz
Nice work. I prefer the Grovers. But to counter the excess head weight, I use wood or plastic tuner buttons. Cheap and Looks cool. A good deal of the weight is in the buttons themselves.
TWANG
not a bad idea or look bakz.
evhwolfgang
Well, I've come to find out that mine has the 8mm hole...not the 10mm. The shaft is 6mm. So, in order to use most of the available tuners, I need to drill/ream the hole or I can buy the Kluson tuners in the 6mm shaft (I did find those). But I really wanted to use the Hipshot Xtender which only comes in 10mm with either the Grover Rotomatic or Schaller M6 mini style buttons. marky33
Hey, nice axe. I have an '08 G-310 and replaced the tuners with a set of the Gibson Historic Specs and the only prob I had was to put in a set of oversize bushings to take up the space. And one other thing was that i had to also drill just 6 extra little holes for the tuners.
Zoki
Those are real pretty, but a bit pricey with all the dough I sink into my EVJr's addiction - does anyone know of a good set of cheap replacement tuners that stay in tune? Thanks!
Billybob Dylan
I swapped out the tuners on it with Grover Vintage Green Keystones. They had a 10mm hole and the Grovers dropped right in. That's good to know, coz that's what I want to put on my Dot. I wonder if they make a locking version...?

Thanks![/quote'] I've had good results with GFS (Guitar Fetish) tuners... I have a set of keystones on my dot and a set of vintage Kluson-style tuners on my Tele... No tuning issues at all... And I think they were like $27 or there abouts..
Zoki
Hey - thanks for the tip Lersxt - I didn't know GFS was doing tuners and the price is right!
Lerxst1281733995
Yeah, they got all kinds of parts there... Bridges, tuners, pots, caps, etc... I got a replacement bridge for my Casino from there... It's a lot more solid than the stock bridge... No buzz...
strangedogs
what's the best (least expensive but still good) drop in replacements for the tuners on my LP100?
Lerxst1281733995
That depends on what style of tuners you want... There's GFS Grover clones: $21.95 Comes in chrome and black too.. If you're like me and prefer a more viintage look: $22.95 They also have all chrome, black and gold keystones... Or if you want locking tuners: $26.95 ditto with the colors.. Now I know some will argue that you should spend $50 or $60, otherwise your guitar will never stay in tune, but I have had no problems with mine.. TWANG
Grovers come in locking tuners.. minis and full size. knob changes galore, too. 18:1 ratio. gold chrome black. gotohs got some great tuners, as well. a couple of things.. if you drill out the peghead, put a little masking tape around each hole.. it helps to keep the paint from chipping. and put tape around the bit so that the bit can only go as deep as it needs to.. sometimes a good bit will draw it's full length through when it gets all the way in.. and then it's much harder to keep the drill bit straight so you wind up getting a larger hole, chipped paint or even chipped wood. I was actually looking for a locking version of the vintage keystones. Kluson make 'em (at $100 a set!) but that means modifying the peghead. If Grover made 'em, they'd drop right in.
