difference in tuners and machine heads

Recommended Posts

are there any difference in machine heads and tuners?

im changing the gold ones on my sherry for chrome or black ones.

would i be able to find some ones to fit my sherry without me doing any mods to the holes?

as always your endless knowledge on all things epi is aprechiated.

Some general pointers to keep in mind.

Generally tuners fit either approx. 8mm(vintage), 10mm(most modern) or 12mm pegholes. So at times you either need to ream the holes with the appropriate tools(I'll let the reaming-experts chip in here LOL) or use conversion-bushings.

Another one is the "gear-ratio". Most modern tuners have higher gear-ratios, meaning smoother transitions. Think 18:1, 40:1.

Since I know nothing of archtops I'll let others chip in here.

Grovers popped right in on my sheri... 14:1 or 18:1

I believe the new locking grovers will definately fit.

get the imperial knobs.. ! they look great.

and they fit the big headstock much better than the smaller buttons.

only a few bucks more.

I just switched from regular Grovers to locking Grovers.

The ratio (18-1) is the same and they were a straight switch, with no drilling or bushings required.

I like the locking tuners as there are no windings around the peg to slip and make tuning harder to keep.

I have an Epi Les Paul Ultra 2.

Pics of the work coming later.
