"Van Halen is Overrated"

... and all the magicians afterwards have to get that trick down perfect to be considered "as good"...

Then they have to either come up with something new (and better) or polish the old trick to a new sheen.

After awhile, that's pretty hard to do when the bar is already set so high.

So then the guys like me take the easy way out and stick to the old Blues-based riffs.

Duck under the bar like we didn't even notice it, and keep on jammin'....

I didnt mean to piss anyone off. lol

When youve been hearing Eddie "doodle-e-oodlng" for over 30 years it loses it shine. The ear grows weary of it. Im not saying hes not a guitar God, that goes without saying.

Look at Hendrix....if he were still alive today do you think hed still be pulling these musical guitar gems out of thin air? not a chance. Hed be playing casinos.

What lifted Jimi high was his talent. What put him into the guitar God stratosphere was that he died young and in his prime.

Clapton was God once, but the novelty wore off over time.

Like Neil Young said, "It's better to burn out than it is to rust".

Regarding all the extraneous posts, I get a kick out of them, but I really do love some Van Halen. Ed is still the man, in my book. I won't even try to emulate him.

Remember, this was my own personal "misheard lyric" from the Train song, "Drops of Jupiter".

What I meant was, that as cool as it was back then to hear Eddie noodle up and down the fretboard, after a while it became boring and repatitious.

I think you knew thats what I meant, youre just being argumentative. I was going

to call you a ****** but decided to rise above it. [flapper]

I too was blown away in '78 when I first heard Van Halen. I was 15 and just beginning to play guitar. Its been said before, not since Hendrix has a player taken the world by storm.

On a side note...

Remember when you first saw a magician pull a rabbit out of his hat?

Watch him do that same trick for 30 years. Does it still give you the same thrill?

Ah.....but has that Magician contributed anything new that changed how other magicians do magic? Has that Magician done something so influential that what he did identifies him? Look at the big picture.

Eddie wasnt the first to do hammer ons, and even today is far from the best at it.

Im one of those guys that considers flash/speed guitar playing dated.

Call me a cork sniffer but I prefer tone and technique.

There was one guy, and one guy only who Eddie was nervous of losing his crown to.

Anyone want to guess?

Michael Anthony said on the radio a month or so back the Randy Rhoads made Eddie

nervous. Perhaps Eddie arranged for the plane crash?

*let the conspiracy begin* lol

Of course eddie wasn't the first to do hammer ons and finger taps, but he incorporated into his playing that created a very distinct style and approch to guitar playing. Again, "who does Eddei sound like"? Has anyone every accused him of cloning someone elses playing or him sounding like someone else? Many had accused SRV for sounding like Hendrix, not to put SRV down, but just making an example.

About Micheal Anthony, you do know that he is in falling out with Van Halen..........so anything that Micheals says about Eddie and vice versa can be and most likely smear attacks to eachother. So comments are taken with a grain of salt.

BTW.....have you ever seen VH, back then called Mammoth and Quiet Riot back in the mid to late 70s when they were playing the club scene in L.A? Let me just say Mammoth had a stronger following than Quiet Riot.......hence getting a record deal much sooner than QR and Randy leaving QR for Ozzy. +:-@
