The Mars Volta

I've just been listening to nothing but The Mars Volta lately. I'm curious to hear opinions on them.

"De-Loused in the Comatorium" is my favorite album, "The Bedlam in Goliath" is probably my least favorite but still good.

Here are a few of my favorite songs:

This one is called "Drunkship of Lanterns" off of the De-Loused album

This one is called "Tetragrammaton" off of the Amputechture album, it's long but just incredible imo.

If you like the first half, be sure to watch part-2 on youtube. It's one song on the album 16 minutes.

Anyway, it seems whoever I know that I bring this band up to, they either love them or hate them.

I personally love this band and it's really fun to play, or atleast try to play, on the guitar.

Omar and Cedric were great in At The Drive-In too.

Here's a letterman performance of Wax Simulacra by TMV off of Bedlam

Thomas Pridgen is a beast on the drums, he was probably the best drummer they've ever had.

At the Drive In is a great band!

so much good stuff

Love the Mars Volta. I'm still hooked on Frances the Mute, personally, but that's about when I caught on to them, and was the first album of their I listened to, so that may play in to it.

At The Drive in was a great band too. It found it a more straight forward channel for their talents, which is a nice mix with The Mars Volta. Their dub reggae project, De Facto, is a fun listen as well.

Over the last couple years I've picked up a bunch of Omar's solo stuff and collabs with other people, and though it's pretty great, most of it just doesn't compete with The Mars Volta. Worth a listen though.

What I noticed about Thomas Pridgen during his stint with the band, is that he never played the older stuff that great. He is an incredible drummer, but seems to lack the soft touch that the older stuff requires. It seems to be 100mph with him all the time. Saw them in concert for the Frances the Mute tour, and then again just before Bedlam when he joined the band, and it was a lot different.

Anyway, here is some other good live stuff:

When I think of Viscera Eyes, I always think of Salma Hayek's dance in From Dusk Til Dawn. This has prompted me to create my own version of Dark Side of the Moon and Wizard of Oz. Creepy, I know...but whatever. The lick in the song makes me think of a woman's hips....yikes...or maybe it's more the horns weaving in, out, and around the lick. Anyway, try it. Mute the Hayek clip, and play the Volta clip.

Now tell me you won't think of this everytime you listen to this song....You're welcome. [tongue]
