ES 335 pickguard on a sherry

I know I'm going to get a ton of responses saying it's not a Gibson so why change it to something it is not. Well that's not the point I like the Orignal Gibson pickguard because it flows nicely with the guitar. Also I like my guitars to have something others don't make it unique... and this is ONE of those things on the guitar. And I do love the epiphone E on the pickguard so I do plan on positioning that correctly based on my Casino... Anyway I know so far that an ES 335 pickguard won't fit so how far so I have to trim it down to fit the sherry? Perhaps someone thAt has done this can help :)

If you go to the Terrapin Island website, you can download a full size template of either the short or long 335 guard and see how different they would be from your sheri. If you send them a note, regarding what changes it would take to allow it to fit, they can tell you what it would cost to do it and I'll bet it isn't all that much. Nice people.

Gibson pickguards mount wirh a small block glued to the underside of the pickguard and a threaded bracket that screws into it. Epi pickguards have a flat angle bracket and a countersunk hole in the pickguard that screws into it. You can probably get a Gibson pickguard to work, but you may have to drill and countersink a hole in the pickguard to match the Epi mounting bracket.

...Or just buy the block and bracket from Stew-Mac for like, two dollars.

Do you have the stock Sheri pickguard? If so, lay it over the closest template that you find you like and trace where the pickup cutouts should be (I doubt that they are the right size or in the right place on the template). You can order a guard without mounting holes and/or pickup cut outs and do those yourself. If you don't feel comfortable with that, email John at Terrapin and ask him what he would charge for a 335 guard with sheri cut outs and that you will send him your guard, with the template taped to it, where you want everything. That's what I did for my Casino guard as they vary from year to year and I wanted a good fit. I ordered mine without mounting holes so that when Gibson mounting .bracket comes, I can glue the block to it. I'll drill the upper (neck) mounting hole using my old guard as a template, just to make sure that everything fits right. I doubt if you'd be able to do any of what I discussed above with the other guard makers They're very set in how they take orders and anything "not stock" blows their minds. I tried to do an art deco gretsch type guard on an Ibanez AS80 once, even offering to make a hard template for them, and they refused.

The other thing to consider, besides PU cutouts and mounting holes, is where the "top" and "bottom" of the guard end up. On my Casino (see picture), the bottom of the guard aligns with the bottom of the pickup. I think it would look pretty ham-handed to have it hanging an inch below. And the top, well a little bit of the body showing above it looks best to me. Just something to think about.

True, you can do this. However, the Gibson-style brackets mount to the side of the guitar with only one screw; the Epi's use two, so this method will leave an exposed screw hole on the side of the guitar. I recently got a Gibson-style L-5 pickguard for my Epi Broadway, and after considering the pros and cons of both options, I think leaving the Epi bracket on and drilling the countersink hole in the pickguard will look better overall. Just my opinion.

I may have this pick guard thing figured out, i found a eBay listing of a Custom made ES 335 pick guard specifically made for Epiphone's, found their main page and ordered one... lets see how this turns out...

:-k I've never ever seen an Epi like this. (All the Epi ES types and Les Pauls I've ever seen have a single hole on the side for the bracket, just like the Gibsons) You said it's like that on a your Broadway?

Maybe because it's full-size depth instead of a thinline... :-k

Bracket mounts where your stock one does. The pickguard superglues to the plastic "block" so that you don't have a screw head in the business part of your guard. They are a little easier to adjust than the slotted flat bracket, but then the stop nut can rattle loose and things will move around if you don't tighten it up. Mostly a looks thing.

I'm not a big fan of the PGs on Epi 335 style guitars either. When I changed mine I thought about using the Gibson mounting block on my Sherry and Dot, but opted not to. The whole in the side of the guitar didn't line up with the Gibson block and the existing hole would have been visible. That would have driven me crazy. I just used the original Epi mounting bracket for both. I bought my PGs from Terrapin and am totally happy with them. They were a little more expensive, but they fit like a glove. I went with a Black/Cream/Black PG on my Sherry and wished I had done the same on my Dot. The cream matches the cream binding really nice, but it is hard to see in the pic below.

They're not cheap, but certainly less than that "heavenly" outfit. Better fit, too.

Actually i looked at terrapin and it seemed far to confusing for me... instead i found this small California company called Jeannie's Guitars and they have specially made ES 335 Pick guard made for the Epiphone ES series... they payment went through today and its under construction right now, and yeah i ordered the same B/C/B/C/B/C/B/C/B/C so on and so forth... you did, all i have to do is drill both mounting holes myself. and i don't intend on buying that block thing... cause i still don't get it i rather have the pickguard screwed on to the mounting bracket cause i know its secure, I've never played a Real ES 335, so i don't know how secure a block mounting bracket really is and i don't want to experiment. I rather not fix something that isn't broke. For the mean time though i did some how find a old ES 335 pickguard laying around my garage (to be honest i have no idea where it came from, maybe when i was experimenting with my casino i don't know.) shaved down the side of it and just stuck it on as a temp, i don't like naked guitars ^_^ i absolutely love pickguard it adds a little spark.

BECAUSE i don't want to annoy everyone on the Gibson forum i'm going to ask my other Sheraton Mod related questions here, i have already tried looking for others but came out the other side answering only a few but not all. Anyway I'm planning on doing a whole tonal change up on my Sheraton II, make it sound better, sustain longer... from what I've read i heard most if not all of you love the way Tone Pros and Gotoh are tonally excellent because the pieces simply resonate into the woods. Also i have read that Graph Tech TUSQ were the best nuts they also resonate with the guitar etc etc. Anyway i know how to deal with the Tone Pros simply buy large post Metric... but what about the TUSQ. I saw one that was specifically made for the Epiphone Les Paul but i'm not sure if Epiphone uses the same nut width on all of their guitars. Aside from these is there anything else i can do tonally to help my guitar? maybe change the Tuners to Grover Imperial but i think thats it. I already have GFS pickups on the bridge and neck (what kind i have NO idea but they sound brilliant so i wont be changing that anytime soon) and doing the 2 changes stated above...

Anyway decided to take a couple of pics of the "Temp Guard"... if you look closely on the top of the bridge pickup you should see a Gap about 1/4th an inch wide, as a result of me shaving the pickguard to make it fit into the bridge. This pickguard does annoy me a little bit because it doesn't have that FAT bevel that i like. it almost camouflages with the entire guitar so i like it to have a fat bevel so you can see the pickguard.

When I did my Ibanex AS80 (pretty much the same guitar), I did a 5 ply, B-W-B-W-B, for the same reason. The two white plys made the shape stand out.

Wow lucky you they don't make those anymore... which upsets me... i like to have the Full ES 335 shape but the modern day AS series seemed to be trimmed down it just doesn't look right.

I don't have the AS80 anymore. In a fit of benevolence, I sold it to an aspiring jazz guitar player across the street. A 13 year old kid that has been walking my dog for me for two years now, to save up for a better guitar and an amp. He'd been eyeing the Ibanez for a while and finally got up the nerve to ask me what I wanted for it. I asked him how much do you have saved up? $200 was his reply. Funny, that's what I was going to ask for it, I told him, with the HSC. This kids a straight A student, he's very dependable with the dog and really needed something better than the POS he was playing to get better. But that's not the best part.

A guy that I deal with at work used to play back in the '70s. He's been trying to sell me a really nice 71 silverface Pro Reverb, complete with cover and casters that's been in a closet for 20 years and that I really don't need. I told him what I had done for the kid, taking a loss selling him the guitar and challenged him to do the same. His parents ended up buying the amp for him, for Christmas, without him knowing. Price? $300! He'll never need another amp and he's putting the Ibanez to better use than I ever would have.

He's playing first chair in the school jazz band, he's got 2 rock bands he plays in and he's gotten noticably better. Pretty cool thing to see. Who knows, maybe someday I'll be able to brag that I helped him get started.

awesome story none the less... you don't see sympathy and hope like that anymore... i recently gave/lent (which ever seemed fit) to a friend i knew for more than a decade... shes going through college and a job has no time to learn not to mention her parents are absolutely broke so shes paying for school through her job. anyway this Casino i gave away is the same one in my "signature". I have a Sheraton now i don't need a casino i guess i was more ES 355 than ES 330. anyway she came over a few days ago and wanted to learn the guitar real bad... she doesn't have any money for a teacher so i recommended a good website that taught me and got me started, loaned her my casino cause it can be an acoustic guitar or an electric if she ever gets around to buying an amp. anyway i have a massive collection and shes a hard working person trying to get through school, so it was worth it to me anyway ^_^

Anyway i just received an email from USPS saying that the person shipped my pickguard i cant wait to see! and what do you think about Imperials on the Sherry... i like it but i also like the Gold tulip by Gibson

Hi ALL,

Anyone here know what to do about a busted truss rod on a Sheri?

Disapointed,
