gvdv Posted March 30, 2012 Share Posted March 30, 2012 Just thought that I would share that today I took delivery of my new Epiphone G-400 (was at the store half an hour earlier than it opened, because I had not checked the messages on my cell phone yesterday, and only discovered that the guitar had arrived at the store when I checked my messages after I got home - I am sure that you can imagine the frustration I felt when I heard that message). Here are my first impressions: A colleague of mine, who had been married to a guitar teacher, but it does not play guitar herself, said that the G-400 sounded nice unplugged – I had that impression too, and I do not necessarily think that that is a good thing, because it points to the lightness of the wood (to me, the more dense the wood of an electric guitar is, the quieter the strings ring out when the guitars unplugged). To do with the above, I find that the neck is very similar to the Epiphone neck on a Casino, although it seems to be a little chunkier (I will have to check on the specs. to see what the case actually is, and will also drag out my Casino to compare the guitars side-by-side). This is the best set up guitar I have ever played in my life. The fret dressing is immaculate, not the merest hint of sharpness anywhere, and the body is flawless in color, and finish – the only thing that is somewhat off-putting is that the pick guard looks like it has some scratches on it – however, I'm not sure whether that is actually a piece of plastic film which they have screwed down onto the pick guard, and which one can remove – I will have a closer look at that over the next couple of days. Sound. Well, I do not really know what to say about this. I really like the sounds that one can get out of the guitar, but I cannot get that Les Paul standard kind of 'straight' sound that I love – that kind of 'thick', 'clean' sound which is particularly apparent on the b and e strings when the guitar is played 'clean'. So, I think that at some point I will go ahead with my plan to 'swap out' the Alnico V pickups which are in the guitar for the '57 'Burstbucker', and the other type of '57 pickup which I forget the name of right now. Overall look. I am in love. Weight/handling. Even though the guitar is neck heavy, as we all know, it is fairly manageable in that respect, although I did notice one point when I was playing standing up that my arm was getting a little tired from holding up (but that could be my repetitive strain injuries showing). The body is surprisingly light – the whole guitar is a fair bit later than the Les Paul. The action is superb. I was a bit worried when I saw the guy in the shop tuning the guitar because I noticed that the strings set between 3 and 4 mm above the fingerboard, and I had visions of my wrists hurting after only a few minutes playing (I have repetitive strain injuries). However, rather than the strings being of quite a high tension, they are really easy to fret. Actually, in a way the action is quite 'springy', in this respect. I changed out the pickups in order to get the best out of it though. HNGD to you. Pete B Posted March 31, 2012 Share Posted March 31, 2012 The EPI SG is my favourite guitar, I have two of them, well 2.5 as I have an express too. As a sit down n play guitar the shape is the best as the waist is inline with the bridge pickup making it easier to play high on the neck. Standing up it does have cg problems which can be overcome. As it's my favourite guitar shape, I looked at getting a Gibson version but couldnt stand the big black plastic covering the guitar, so I decided Epi was the best.
