onewilyfool Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Since I am such a big fan of Keb'mo, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, etc., I thought this was an interesting thread......titled: Why Black People Don't Play Guitar? http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140508 Below is the link to Kevin Eubanks playing accoustic....very good...
ksdaddy Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 AGF???? Wow, you must be special. I tried to register over there and they wouldn't even acknowledge my repeated emails asking them why I couldn't get in!
Jayla Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 AGF???? Wow' date=' you must be special. I tried to register over there and they wouldn't even acknowledge my repeated emails asking them why I couldn't get in![/quote'] Had a similar experience. Gave up.
jefleppard Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Had a similar experience. Gave up. kind of snooty, aren't they? not to be condescending, but they are welcome here anytime.
onewilyfool Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 KSDaddy.....I guess your reputation proceeds you....lol....I registered there LOOOONG ago...so don't know what the policy is for new members.....If you want, I'll write you a letter of recommendation.....lol
Taylor Player Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I never had a problem registering over theren (and if they take me, they will take anyone!) .... I heard the martin forum was impossible to get on but I have never tried that one. I like the AGF for discussions of many things, but for Gibson talk, this is the place I like to be!
TheLiveSoundGuy Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 You mean there are other Acoustic forum boards?
jefleppard Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 You mean there are other Acoustic forum boards?
ksdaddy Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I expel urine in their general direction. I don't need snooty or flammable forums. I haven't been to the Gretsch forum since about a month before the election, just because I know it gets HOT over there when politics comes up. I don't need it. My life is complicated "just enough" making ends meet and getting along at work and home without going out looking for trouble on the internet. Sometimes it can find me anyway! I'd rather be a Gibson dork amongst friends.
jannusguy Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 i've never been able to register on AGF or UMGF. i've seen a couple of guitars i was interested in but can't get in to contact the sellers. thought it might have to do with my browser but haven't seen fit to change it.
wonderful remark Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Had a similar experience. Gave up. Same here, I tried to register twice, both times failed......... I'm such a failure.. But to the OP, Great find!! I've always wondered why black people don't play guitar.. you go on youtube, it is always white people doing the ol' time blues...
Rambler Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Am on both--Jeez, spesh-shul! Arent those both powered by YU-something? That server is a little quirky. They handle Stef Grossman's forum-- did run into some quirks on that one.
Jayla Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Same here' date=' I tried to register twice, both times failed......... I'm such a failure.. But to the OP, Great find!! I've always wondered why black people don't play guitar.. you go on youtube, it is always white people doing the ol' time blues...[/quote'] I checked out the OP and admit that at first I thought it was a joke. I mean, come on! Then I realized the poster was serious... It's yet another great example of why the internet should never be your *only* source of information!
jeff5341 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 There may be some merit to the post, I read one of George Gruhn's newsletters a few months ago talking about guitar sales being down and his reasoning as to why, he attributed it to the popularity of hip hop. One of his key points was that he had listened to the current top ten on the pop chart and only 2 out of the 10 featured a guitar with any prominence. I freely admit I don't listen to current pop, I'm stuck in the 70's, but what I have heard doesn't use a 6 string guitar much the major instrument sounds like a bass. So maybe George is right and what the AGF poster is actually seeing is just a general migration to the bass in younger players.
Taylor Player Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Just to clear a couple things up... The original OP on that thread has somewhat of a history of starting threads that are meant to rile people up a bit. No biggie, he apparently seems to get plenty of responses to his random thoughts. I have to disagree with several who feel the AGF is snooty or "above" the rest. It really is a nice place with loads of really nice people who are VERY informed about acoustic guitars. That said, everyone has opinions and sometimes people will get a little over the top when defending theirs, but the rule there has always been "BE NICE" and it seems to work for the most part. The moderators do a great job of keeping things civil. For topics that discuss religion or politics, you have to become a paying "Charter" member to access an area called "The Dock". On the Dock, those topics are almost always being discussed which is why I tend to avoid that place. I prefer to discuss guitars and there are always some good topics going on there. I can guarentee that if you have a question on acoustic guitars and are having problems elsewhere finding answers, a post at the AGF will be viewed by and responded to very quickly by one of the 25,000 + members. Give it a chance if you haven't and if you have and didn't like it, maybe give it another chance. I have found many people over there really do like Gibsons too. It is not always all about Taylor but seeing as how it started out as the Unofficial Taylor forum, before Taylor pulled the plug, it will always be geared somewhat toward Taylors. I do have to say, I have learned more about Luthier built guitars and the guitar photos and build threads there are amazing!!!
ksdaddy Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I've never been give then opportunity to try them. They refuse to respond to repeated emails and the registration process does absolutely nothing.
Jayla Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Jeff, That may be, but all of the things you mention (guitar sales being down, the popularity of hip hop, the current top ten, the growing popularity of the bass guitar, etc.) don't explain "why black people don't play guitar," which is the subject of the OP. The reason that none of these explanations satisfy, and nor do those given by any of the other posters here or on the AGF, is because the OP's argument is simply wrong. Try to imagine a history of the guitar in popular music *withouth* any black players (and I'm assuming folks are only talking about U.S. pop music -- what about African pop, Reggae, Cuban music, Carribean music more broadly speaking, etc., etc.?) -- it's absurd on the face of it. And if the OP came to this mind-boggling conclusion after a cursory perusal of YouTube, as if that meant anything, well, that says more about his/her ignorance than it does about the subject at hand. Oh, and about the AGF -- I don't find them snooty at all. In fact I read the forum, generally enjoy what I find there, and would like to be able to contribute. I tried but wasn't able to register, and apparently I'm not alone. It is unfortunate that, for whatever reason, the folks running the forum are either unwilling or unable to manage it properly.
Taylor Player Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 KS... I truly am sorry that your having problems getting registered over at the AGF.... You certainly would be able to be a valued member over there like you are here. I never had that problem and with over 28,000 members, I have never heard (like with the martin forum) about problems registering. I know it is a different host than the Martin forum which has always had those type of registration problems. I hope you keep trying to figure it out. Maybe I will start a thread asking if anyone else had problems registering and link it here as there may be good advice on what problems people are experiancing and how they got around them.
cotten Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 Howdy, folks! John Cotten here, one of the mods over on the Acoustic Guitar Forum. Someone let me know that some of you had mentioned that you were having problems registering over there, so I signed up here to see if I can help. Please excuse this long epistle-length post, and please understand, I am not coming here to try to lure Gibson Forum members away. I'm just really sorry people have had trouble. It's just that if you're interested in the AGF and couldn't join, maybe I can help. I can guarantee one thing: any problems you may have had joining there are not because of the AGF beening snooty. Hey, they let me in! There are two primary reasons for for the recent AGF registration problems, both of which we're working on. First, the main Administrator responsible for this chore has been battling pneumonia and is just now getting his life back. Second, for a while, we had a tremendous problem with spam of all kinds, from porn and viagra sales to investing in gold or a new library card. (You know how those librarians can be!) Most of the spam was from automatic Bots that were generating new IDs and forum applications by the hundreds, almost always with a gmail address, and providing very little information about who this "person" applying is. I sincerely hope you haven't had that problem here. It can be a real pain in the forum. For that reason, we've been much more careful lately about accepting new registrations. This has cut our spam almost to zero. Unfortunately, it has also kept some good people out. I'm sorry about that! When signing up for the AGF, and I suppose for other forums too, it will be helpful if people give as much personal information as they are comfortable with. On the AGF, we never use it for any purpose other than verifying that this is indeed a person and not some porn sight or dating service for left handed accordian players. A real name, a general location, a little bio, and a non-gmail email address makes it much easier to separate the legitimate applications from the bad ones. If they like, once they are in, they can go back and delete any information from their profile that they would rather not have available. If someone trys to register with nothing but a gmail address and a screen name, their application looks just like that of a spammer, and will probably not be accepted. If you've been turned down, I apologize. Please try us again. It's not because we're being snooty or trying to be difficult. We enjoy new members there, and new members there don't have to earn the right to be respected. We do have one rule that many people like, that sets the AGF apart from most forums: "Be nice." Simple. Effective. As impossible to accurately define as it is easy to recognize. Every forum has its own atmosphere and way of doing things, and "Be nice" is the overriding rule there. If I or any of our other AGF moderators can ever be of service, please don't hesitate to let us know. We would consider it an honor. Yes, even if you're an accordian playing librarian! :D John Cotten AGF Moderator (By the way, the thread on black guitarists went amazingly well, considering the possibility for all kinds of racist remarks. Still, it had pretty much run its course, and was closed earlier this evening. Check it out - I've added a number of new names to my list of guitarists I want to get to know!)
Taylor Player Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 Thanks for responding John and welcome to the Gibson forum... This forum also has some very informed members and I know of several that participate in both forums like I do. In my opinion, the more informed I can be about the guitars I play and love, the better! Hopefully any of you that have had problems registering at the AGF will try again using Cotten's suggestions. It really is a wonderful forum much like this one.... Plus, I would love to see more Gibson photos appearing over there!
rcadian Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I can only second what Taylor Player and Cotten have said...as a regular browser/poster on the AGF, the help I've received over there has been great and interesting threads pop up all the time... I've just joined this forum as I've just bought my first Gibson (news of that to follow on both forums) and while over at AGF there does appear to be more love for Martins and Taylors, as you can see there are Gibson owners who frequent both...and I've been made to feel welcome in both places... Rc

cotten Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Just thought I'd bump this back to the top, in case anyone interested had missed it. If you've had problems and are still interested in registering on the AGF, read what I wrote above and try again. If you need help, don't hesitate to let me or the other mods know. We'd be happy to have you join us if you like. Some people have time for more than one great forum! / cotten
