Lefty Guy
I spent some time at Macari's in Denmark St, London this lunchtime with a client who I'd promised to help look for his first quality acoustic. As you can imagine, I'm gently pushing him down the Gibson route.....which is fine as he's a bluesy type player, so a Taylor probably wouldn't suit ;-) & has funds available. Anyway, they have plenty of righty Gibson acoustics on show & he tried out 2 TVs (a J-45 & a Southern Jumbo) plus a natural topped rosewood J-45 Custom. He, being by background a base player, was instantly attracted to the bassier rosewood Custom but aknowledged the cleaner, crisper, more balanced tone of the 2 TVs would probably be better in the long run for him. Both sounded excellent btw & very similar, so bling would be the deciding factor I guess. I have to say the guys at Macari's were offering a great deal on all 3 if he'd buy one there & then - e.g. £1900 for a pristine SJ TV, which is a steal in my book (or £1970 if he returns within a few days). In the end my client wasn't prepared to shell out that much cash without some further deeper thought, despite my best efforts to persuade him! Just thought I'd highlight this in case any of you righties were gassing for a TV J-45 or SJ :-)

Yes, saw that thanks, £1672 to be precise but no way to play it first. Next cheapest looks like Guitar Village at £2149, then GAK or Coda at £2199, so Macari's is still pretty good imho. j45nick
Gibson pricing seems a bit odd right now. MSRP seems to be going up, but advertised discounts are sometimes greater than in the past. Anything to try to find that elusive marketing sweet spot.

I guess FX makes a huge difference, depending when these guys bought their stock....
j45nick
I guess FX makes a huge difference, depending when these guys bought their stock.... I don't know how you hedge that these days, given currency volatility. I hedged by renegotiating most of my euro contracts in dollars. Sterling seems so strong now that you guys in the UK should be getting very good prices on new US guitars. If not, come over here and buy, new or used. Gruffchris
Hey Lefty, there's UK companies that will price match, I found DV247(match any European price), but when I bought my SG from thomann, a few people were saying GAK and a couple of other companies will price match? Hairy Dave
Hi Lefty, there's also a AJ on Thomann for approx £1260/£1270. Granted not a TV but a great price nonetheless. Dave

ponty
I love browsing Denmark St ( I will be on 48th St NYC next month) I would probably not buy there until checking out all the other good places in the UK. Coda Music in Stevenage is great for stock and prices. Rick and Justin Harrison own many of the Denmark St stores - a solid reason to avoid them! Maccaris is good, round the corner on Charring Cross Road.

Maccaris is good, round the corner on Charring Cross Road. Ive heard Sam Ash is moving from 48th Street to 34th somewhere but not sure when. It was only Rudys & Sam Ash on 48th Street I think(If Mannys is still there its a Sam Ash owned store) 30th Street Guitars is usually a good stop in. And if there is a bus at Port Authority bus terminal on 42nd St to Staten Island Mandolin Brothers is a worth while visit for the day.

Yes that is true.48th Street will lose all its musical character. Sam Ash is moving imminently, hopefully not before I get there. They are going to handle a Martin repair for me. Mojorule
I will be on 48th St NYC next month He will be busking, so be sure to to throw a few dimes his way. You can't miss Ponty, as he always turns up with two J45s and plays both at the same time! PS. Yes on Coda. I bought my Epiphone Casino there for that reason, long ago. Of course, I wish I'd not bought the Casino, but that's not Coda's fault.
