rdclmn7
My son inherited a sweet-sounding '85 Les Paul studio. Its in horrible shape and we both would like to refurbish it. It has to be stripped and the binding has to be replaced. It also needs the headstock redone. Hopefully the Company won't have a problem confirming its pedigree. Any info would be helpful. skilsaw
Sounds like a fun project. However, unless you can do the work yourself, the cost of having the guitar refurbished may be more than the guitar worth. If the guitar has some sentimental value, it may be worth fixing up. btoth76
Agree with the above statements. Couldn't be happier finding a cheap Norlin Custom for such a project. Some tips for the project from experts: http://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online_Resources/Finishing/ Cheers... Bence

cjsinla
If it's playable, I personally would leave it alone. Please post some pics, would love to see why you say the binding needs to be replaced.
LPguitarman
Just curious. When did Gibson make Studio's with Binding?

pippy
...and Studio Customs... Short-lived but very nicely made and came with PAF-style p'ups (see 'Pat Appl. For' sticker on p'up surround). Nice guits. A few forumites have examples. P.

cody78
There's one of those Studio Customs for sale here in the UK at the moment and at a very good price of £1,195. http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/product/1984-gibson-les-paul-studio-custom/ You don't see them too often here, but sure looks like a sweet guitar... Looks like they made 'em with a 3-piece top
billymagnum
have to say, in terms of studios, the biggest turn off for me has always been the lack of binding. i never saw a studio custom but i like it...
rct
Last year I ran into a really good condition 85(I think) Studio Standard, bound and dots on the neck, tobacco sunburst. I think he wanted 900 for it on consignment. If I didn't have a great Les Paul, well, two now, I mighta bought that one. rct
brdeveloper
have to say, in terms of studios, the biggest turn off for me has always been the lack of binding. i never saw a studio custom but i like it... I don't care too much with the binding. Although the figured tops and nitro finish make a Standard look classy, the bindings can look a bit dated in some modern Standards. I know the bindings are a important part of the classic LP design. White bindings and inserts made a lot of stuff sexier in the 50s, like those white inserts on Beetle tires. Don't kill me, I think bindings can be a nice finish element on a vintage guitar, a reissue Standard or even on a semi-hollow body. On the other hand, I can't see any beauty on a 2015 Standard with automatic tuning pegs and a hi-tech zero fret nuts with white bindings. It's like installing airfoils and onboard computers on 50's Beetles.
billymagnum
Ha no ones gonna kill you for having your own taste! As far a dated looking goes the same old bursts every year don't interest me either. I saw this Caribbean blue on the 2014 lp signature and it was the first time I absolutely had to have a les paul. I like finishes that aren't seen all the time and owned by everyone. But binding is one of those things I just love almost no matter what
