hey guys..

the volute situation is very strange. I have owned and still own quite a few Gibsons from the early to late 70's and the volute position on them makes sense. As i posted before..the alex 355 is almost like a 70's 355 knockoff guitar ..the features and details really differ from the original guitar. don't know why gibson couldn't just make a vos....just spec it out like the original!!! they had alex's guitar!! must've just been too much trouble for them or something' date=' because they had the resources.

regarding the volute specifically..it's really wierd that it is where it is on the alex 355..because it really serves no purpose!! it's back too far from the weak spot between the neck and the headstock..it's more like a big bump between the first and 2nd fret!! on the 70's gibsons, the volute is just at the very bottom of the headstock and end of the neck..right where the two join. that makes sense..[/quote']

Hey Sean' date='

Thanks for posting that. However, the link does not work. Could you post that picture here? Thanks.[/quote']

Here is the correct link for Sean's 355. The pictures show some facets of a period correct 355.

hey guys,

yeah the '79 is very close to a '76. I actually just had a 1976 and sold it to Dallas Greene of the band Alexisonfire, a major label band out of Canada. I have actually owned two '76 355's and they were exactly like this '79, except for the fact that they both had a very skinny 1 & 9/16th inch nut, but the details were the same as the '79. here's a closer look at the volute.

I am a vintage Gibson guy all the way..they're my absolute favorite...I swore I would never buy a post 1983 Gibson...hmm..as far as new Gibsons, I do have a 2005 J-190 acoustic that I love (but it was made in Montana, by different craftsmen than nashville), and now the AL 355,hmm., .. made by the Gibson custom shop!...well,...I wonder how long those guys actually looked over Alex's guitar?? and what kinda notes they took!!

Don't get me wrong ,I love my AL355 nicest guitar I've had the pleasure to play, but It will be my last Gibson ,now if all us 300 AL buyers said we'd never buy a Gibson product again ,that might get there attention $120,000,00 loss in sales plus all the other stuff we won't be buyin! That might get us some straight answers ..................

Hello friends,

Thrilled, proud new owner of AL 265!!! After spending way too much time thinking about it, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one last week. It delivered to my office yesterday and I could not be more excited to get home and play. It certainly is a stunning piece. I am still very surprised, actually shocked, that I was able to get one "so late in the game." I initially intended to pre-order one, but never did. With Rush having such a large (loyal) following and limited number of guitars, I feel very, very lucky to own one brand new without having to try and find one second hand. Pick guard coming off soon and then I will look for a replacement arm. Have a great weekend!!!

I was just on two on-line stores and noticed that Alex's signature on the guitar case has been fixed. The signature on my case is cut off. Was this the situation with anyone else? Hmmmmm........what to do.

I guess you would have to post a picture of your case in order for us to determine what you mean. But, my case is the same as the picture you have there. By the way that is not how his signature typically looks. I have his signature Triamp and the COA has his real signature on there. I will post a picture of it, when I get a chance. I know my signature has changed over time, but this is really different. By the way, the link to Music 123 has pictures of one of the prototypes. There is no Alex Lifeson on the TRC and no number on the back of the headstock as well as no CS emblem. And, it has our friendly neighborhood wrong volute. So, that should settle that part of the mystery, that the protos are as the Admin said, all made from the same template.

I'll take a photo of my guitar case when I get home tonight but basically the top of the "A" in Alex and the bottom of the "L" in Lifeson are cut off because its a larger signature if you know what I mean. The photo I just posted shows a smaller signature, that now fits on the case nicely. I thought I read on this forum somewhere that it happened to someone else but I must be mistaken. Thanks again Wondo for your input and "cheers" from your neighbour to the north!

Yes, I read on the forum here that someone else had the tips of the signature cut off. And on mine, the signature has been printed so that the bottom of the L is cut off.

I think the online pictures are proto versions which are approved by Gibson (which is why most dealers aren't allowed to show pictures of actual stock, lol!). I think the printing of the signature is going to vary quite a bit through the run, but it does seem as though it should have been printed a bit smaller.

I can't honestly say it bothers me, but you could argue it's more evidence of rushed production.

typically the signatures are silk-screened on...perhaps the screen or case was a bit out of position when yours was applied? at any rate, if it's a problem for you we could probably investigate getting you a new case.

Thank you Custom Admin on your reply, I wasn't expecting it. I need to refresh my memory on exactly how the signature looks like on my guitar case, so I'll take a look once I get home after work today and post a photo. Admittedly, when I first saw the case back in May, I thought it looked strange the way some of the letters didn't fit on the case. If I decide that I would like a new case, how would I go about it? I ordered my guitar through a guitar shop in Ontario Canada.

Hello Custom Admin,

I just took a look at my guitar case again and its not worth the hassle of getting a new one. The signature is fine, the "AL" in Alex is slightly cut off at the top but I can live with it. Thanks again for offering me the opportunity if I decided that a new case is in order.

Cheers!

Yep, mines a right mess, its off centre and it cuts the top of the 'A' and both 'L's' off........it looks crap and zero care taken whilst being carried out....

Here we go.......

Top of the 'A' & both L's missing and its off center, sorry to say I've had a few friends spot it straight away and were totally shocked.........it's also very bitty as in its not a nice full print either, like the dye or paint being used was running out.......

Wow, that's pretty bad, Johnny. Dunno how that one even got past QC. You've every right to ask for another case there I reckon.

Here's a pic of mine, which I suspect is similar to lots of others, printed off-center with the bottom of the 'L' cut off when it needn't have been. Sloppy work, whichever way you look at it.

Enduroexpert,

Now that is a bad job. You should have that one replaced.

VRob8,

that is how mine looks. The L on mine actually just wraps around to the ridge of the case. I have no problem with it whatsoever. It actually looks pretty good.

Look, my Lifeson looks and plays fantastic. The case is fine. All would be just wonderful with this guitar if the most glaring mistake were not so, and that is the volute.

With all of these obvious mistakes coming to the surface. I am actually just sad. Sad, that they would do this to an artist that obviously deserves so much more. Alex is really one of rock's most underated guitarists and through the years people have tended to not take him seriously. Well, it looks as if the Cutsom Shop has followed suit. I only wish Alex would have paid closer attention to this since it has affected so many people.
