yeeshkul
So i got my second 61 reissue SG with maestro Vibrola from Thomann, because the first one was butchered by knife at the Gibson workshop. Well this one came with strings about 0.5 cm above the fret board, because the bridge pickup is installed all crooked. Instead of fixing the pickup, they have lifted the strings - bam, sorted. Also the frets are not sanded well and feel scratchy. So this is what Gibson is these days? Or do they just send some sort of junk to Thomann internet shop expecting people put up with defects? Any experience? This is a 2000 USD guitar ...

I had a new 339 in 2015 that had a intermittent signal problem. I needed to clean the switch contacts. It also had the G binding in the nut. That's common too. This was my first Gibson so like you, I used this forum at the time also. I cant believe they separate out flawed instruments before determining distribution. You sound like you've had enough. Maybe time to get a refund?
Larsongs
Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you get it resolved.. I’d send that one back & keep sending them back until they finally get that you aren’t going to settle for sub par quality & decide to get it right.. I just got a new USA Epiphone Casino & it’s equal to my MIJ Terada built Gretsch George Harrison Duo Jet.. IMO Terada is building the finest mass Production Guitars on the Planet.. In my case Gibson Nashville ES Shop is doing excellent work.. My new Casino is flawless! Edited September 18, 2021 by Larsongs
yeeshkul
I decided to have it replaced for the second time, which means i am about to receive my 3rd guitar. After that i will probably ask for refund. Which is a shame because i really wanted to pay for quality. As for the pictures, it is hard to take a picture a a badly sanded frets, isn't it? I didn't bother to take a picture of the crooked pickup and lifted strings, because i would fixt that myself. The reason i sent it back was the sharp frets. yeeshkul
Oh, i actually did take a picture. Instead of fixing the bridge pickup, they lifted the bridge. Next one. Edited September 20, 2021 by yeeshkul
SteveFord
They use a Plek machine so there's no sanding involved.
Eracer_Team
@yeeshkul that "twisted" bridge pickup is from on 2 screw mounting screws that are spring tension, The torque the mounting springs put on a 2 point pivot location on the pickup causes the twist Quite normal

yeeshkul
Thomann just sent me email, that the guitar was in perfect condition, and thus they are can't replace it with a better piece and issuing a refund. That supports my theory that Gibson sends their defective or second grate pieces to European e-shops where people are more likely to put up with defects. Thus Thomann had no better guitar to replace it.
yeeshkul
I called to them, asking what they mean by a "perfect condition", they apologized and said they mean a "standard condition", or better "what they have been seeing from Gibson lately". Eracer_Team
Sounds like Thomann, is just trying to get rid of you now. You said your first was "butchered with a knife". So you returned it. But your 2nd one , you didn't like the fret dressing and the setup. Certainly seems like Thomann thinks you can't be satisfied and just dumping you with a refund Edited September 22, 2021 by Eracer_Team
yeeshkul
Yeah, they absolutely dumped me. :D I am hard to deal with, for being just an e-shopper. The question is, if they really have a guitar with clean frets, nicely centered Vibrola and not cut by knife. That's actually what i'd like to know. Larsongs
What about Anderson’s? https://www.andertons.co.uk/search?categoryId=&storeId=10151&catalogId=3074457345616676668&langId=-1&sType=SimpleSearch&resultCatEntryType=2&showResultsPage=true&searchSource=Q&pageView=&beginIndex=0&pageSize=24&searchTerm=Gibson+sg+maestro&authToken=-1002%2CXZvf36sLiPiYegUJrwTEpYgBzE92SYyViFqNTYY0v8k%3D&#facet:&productBeginIndex:0&facetLimit:&orderBy:&pageView:grid&minPrice:&maxPrice:&pageSize:& Edited September 23, 2021 by Larsongs
yeeshkul
Thank you but i am afraid that may come with taxis now after Brexit. Also the waiting time is 3 Months. I got this message from my friend from the US: "Gibson went into bankruptcy in 2018. They came out owned by their biggest lender KKR. KKR is a pure capitalist vulture company. They are interested in extracting their cash, not in Gibson heritage or future. They will milk the brand. It's what private equity firms do - extract cash. So don't expect Gibson of old to be back." That would explain the quality issues quite well. I guess i will buy a seconhand hand one after all. Eracer_Team
There's been a lot of change at Gibson since the 2018, issues. Including removing Henry from running the company to a new CEO that plays guitar
Larsongs
My new 2021 Epiphone USA Casino is the equivalent of a Custom Shop Guitar.. It is absolutely flawless & sounds even better than my other 3 Casinos…. Yeeshkul, What year were those SG’s produced? There could have been production issues coming out of the lockdown.. I've owned many Gibsons over the years.. I did have a couple with Production flaws that I sent to Gibson to have resolved under the Warranty.. One was a 2011 Epiphone Reissue 50th Anniv. Casino & the other was a 2014 Gibson ES Les Paul.. Both came back in perfect condition & were Set up better than my Pro Luthier can do…

Eracer_Team
@Larsongs if he's dealing with Thonmann that's a dealer in Germany. As far as I know Gibson only warranties USA claims , not UK/Europe He'd have to work with his distributor, and he chose to ask for complete swaps till they did want him as a customer

Hence, the too bad comment…lt is a shame that Gibson doesn’t have a European Warranty Repair Center..
yeeshkul
They do just swaps. I would love to have the the first guitar repaired and set up, they sent an even worse replacement instead.
yeeshkul
Also, I wrote a review on Thomann web and they haven't posted it. They have some kind of censorship going on that is based on an idea that people who write negative reviews do it on purpose, as they must be saboteurs from other guitar shops. Which i am absolutely not. I just have 30 years of guitar playing experience and can recognize a badly crafted guitar. If he didn’t correct the issue I’d call the Owner.. If I couldn’t get through to him or her I’d write them a letter.. Not an Email.. If they are a reputable Company they will resolve your issue.. If they aren’t you don’t want to do business with them anyway.. Order it from another Company.. It may take some time.. I ordered a new USA Epiphone Casino when NAMM first introduced them… I waited a year! But it was worth it… Good luck..
