STAR CHILD
Hey guys, I have a 68 Les Paul Custom Reissue. It's one year old, and I have noticed that, black residue comes off the ebony fret board when I play? Is this normal to have black residue on the tips of my fingers? Thanks for your help
Tim Plains
I've never experienced that. Maybe it just needs a cleaning?
Dub-T-123
My dads Strat has an ebony fretboard and I noticed that it leaves a black residue on my fingertips. I don't think it's a problem.
NeoConMan
Ebony on a Strat? Really? Cool. Hmmmm.... I suggest Tim's take on it. Do a good cleaning and maybe oil it per Gibson's recommendation. Wonder if you're getting a little fine dust from final sanding of the board? BigKahune
I've got some ebony FBs only saw that when the guitars were brand new for the first couple plays. I clean my FBs and strings with GHS Fast Fret (no affiliation), there are some other good products.
rockstar232007
Believe it or not? Gibson (and I'm sure many other guitar manufacturers who use ebony wood) use ebony stain on their ebony fretboards to give them an all-black appearance, because completely black ebony is VERY rare. If you've ever seen a bare (unfinished) ebony blank, you'll notice that it almost resembles inverted rosewood, so in order to cover up the lighter lines, they have to stain them black. swleary
My Warwick Bass had the samething when I first got it. I made sure I cleaned it and it went away on it's own. Sounds to me like it is the stain they use on it. Maybe your playing it so fast, your burning the fret board Sorry had to add a little humor in to it
STAR CHILD
Thanks guys, I thought it was probably the stain that they use on ebony necks!!!
