Hail the Loonie!

I liked it better when our government was run by responsible adults.

Gotta go back a few decades before we see much of that.

We now have a generation of voters clueless about the original role of the US government.

They hear something that sounds good and mark their ballot for it.

It's like promising every kid in the country cake and ice cream...

Just make sure you talk politics with those 18, 19 year olds and the 20, 30, and 40 somethings so they understand what it is all about. They don't have to agree with you, just so they understand the concept and what their part is in the process. They won't get it in school and they certainly won't get it from their contemporaries.

They need to unnerstand that the gubmint don't 'owe' them anything. The gubmint is US and THEM... unless they let a small faction take it away from them.

Got that right.........I believe we are now looking the other way as part of American good will' date=' hearts and minds and junkies. Also now there is talk Karzai is on junk himself.[/quote']

Are you saying we're letting the poppy trade fluorish?

Not too many years ago, we made a fuss about the Afghan poppy trade. Our then pres pressured Karzai to do something about it. The net media showed the 'something' they were doing about it. 6 guys piled out of a Toyota p'up and began thrashing down that 'devil weed' with hand held grass whips.... a thousand acre field and they sent 6 guys with garden tools... Yeah, that was for the camera's benefit.

Anyone hear of 2,4-D?

Yeah' date=' several countries in Europe use it.

But I don't think the UK ever joined in, did they?

Where are all the Brits?

Nope. The Brits, being off the continent on an island, have a weird relationship with the rest of Europe and that only intensified when Tony Blair buddied up with Bush on the Iraq invasion. From what I know every few years they talk about voting on whether to adopt the Euro and it fails every time. They hold onto the pound like it's their last drop of national pride.

Conservatives are to blame for Obama being in charge due to electing Bush party leader. Same as my province, there was a conservative moron in power (not BECAUSE he was a conservative, he could have been aligned with ANY party and he would have been a moron) and his ineptitude caused dozens of conservative ridings who had been conservative for decades to be turned over to the NDP (New Democratic party, basically socialists).

But I digress,

A strong loonie SUCKS for Canadian consumers and businesses. As soon as it hits par, Canadians go onto American business websites, and order loads of stuff from the states sending our money down south. American investments, tourism and business ventures dry up because why come to Canada when you can stay at home for the same price? With Summer on the way and the majority of Eastern Canadian provinces relying very heavily on tourism income to pay down debt (since these provinces have all but used up most of their natural resources at this point, we were the cradle of the country). With a strong Canadian dollar our tourist industry is all but screwed from the influx of American visitors dropping. So go ahead Canadians funnel all of your money down south and drive the dollar down again. At least we'll be able to sell painted rocks with googly eyes and "moose dropping" candy to the tourists that way.

Dave in Spain, what do YOU know about it over there?

Sorry Neo I haven't checked back in on this thread.... Yes the euro is used in just about all the major European countries. You are right England never went in on it. They still use the Pound. Things are so expensive in England that if they did go to the euro it would bankrupt everybody there....

Yep.

Saw it on Geraldo so it must be true.

:-)

He was interviewing some Marines who were explaining that their orders are to leave the crops alone.

Destroying the crops would starve the local populace and drive them back to the Taliban for their survival.

See' date=' [i']politics[/i] in a war zone can be so complicated when you fxck around year after year...

Here's a thought. Why not help them by showing them they can grow FOOD! instead of intoxicating flowers? We've just aided and abetted the drug trade.... as we've always done.... :)

You see... there are always two sides to the value differential between legal tender of different countries. When the value of your coinage is up, you can buy lots of stuff from other countries on the relative cheap, thereby depriving local manufacturers of the sale. Conversely, when the value of your coinage is down, people of other countries can purchase your stuff on the cheap thereby helping local manufacturers make sales. The only thing a strong dollar does is help the consumer purchase more stuff he doesn't really need.

Great Britain, I think, was involved early in the Euro process, then backed out. We are now seeing the down side to a common coinage across national borders. Greece is pretty much bankrupt. This means, whether the Euro countries like it or not, that debt is shared amongst the Euro using countries. It is, however, good for Greece. Greece isn't the only one. They are just getting the headlines now.

Maybe the Americas should get their own currency. We could call it the Amerigo. But if we did, we would have to assume the debt of all member countries from Canada to Argentina. Canada and Argentina would probably make decent partners, but... Mexico? not sure if that's good or not. How about Haiti? I think not.
